- FaithfultravelerHalifax, Canada3,321 contributionsSankt Petri kyrkaSaint Peter's Church (Swedish: Sankt Petri kyrka) is in Malmö, Sweden was built in the 14th century as the main church of the city. The church was a spiritual centre during the Reformation, and contains late medieval murals of recognized high quality, as well as a number of unusual furnishings. The altarpiece, made in 1611, is one of the largest in the Nordic countries. The church is built as a basilica with three naves and transepts. The church is actually dedicated to two saints, St. Peter and St. Paul, Ecclesia beatorum Petri et Pauli apostolorum. See pics attached...Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2024
- JvH48Amersfoort, The Netherlands68 contributionsUnplanned church visit, attracted by red stones outside, also housing two organs with unusual capabilitiesWe passed St Peter’s church in the immediate vicinity of Malsö’s main train station and could not resist going inside, primarily attracted by the bricks on the outside wall, nice red color, unevenly bricked up into a varied pattern. It got better inside, housing a variety of objects too admire. I could not help myself, as a rule obsessed by church organs, to look up at the choir loft. In a Wiki article about this church, I saw a series of subsequent organs were installed there, eventually housing one of Marcussen & Son (Denmark) as of 1951. So far so good. Modern enough to have escaped from dereliction due to limited budgets and diminishing interest for such costly instruments. That is what happens elsewhere, but obviously not here. Moving ahead within the church towards the liturgical center, I was pleasantly surprised when seeing a modern looking organ there with a ditto modern 6-manual console. Said Wiki article mentions a renowned builder: Klais (Germany). Its capabilities surpass that of a “normal” organ, the latter only capable of playing the usual notes and the common accords we learn during music lessons. This modern one allows all sorts of voices to be constructed, the sky is the limit. It even got better: the 1951-organ in the back can be played from the console in the front of the church. Together a formidable combination for a church to have. Nevertheless, unable to avoid preaching a bit, I sincerely hope that both these instruments are proficiently used in concert practice. In my country, I observe a declining interest in church organs and related music, and organ concerts usually count only a handful attendees. Maybe it is different here.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 21, 2024

These places/buildings often give an inner view of people, culture, their believes and their history! St Peter’s is no exception, not as elaborate as many others I have visited, but the deep spirituality can be felt when entering this 13th century building! It’s of evangelical / Lutheran / Protestant denomination and it’s focus on the spiritual being rather then excessively ostentatious presentation often found in other places of worship. It’s also a reflection of the Scandinavian mindset of form and function, the essence of being, and so on! Certainly a must place to visit if this is what you are looking for! For more precise details, I suggest to search Wikipedia as it give a complete picture! A place of serenity & reflection! #sweden #thetourist #alifetimetrip #Malmö #malmöcity #sanktpetrikyrka #stpeterschurchVisited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 26, 2024

Upon arriving at the Malmo train station, my feet almost automatically walked into this old church.....used for hundreds of years, and still in use......the center aisle has numerous people/ families buried in places, all marked by stone coverings that are now barely able to be read. Many people have entered those doors over the centuries, and listened to untold sermons.....it is well-maintained, and that is certainly a credit to those who do the work.

Wonderful and imposing church a stone's throw from the famous squares. The church is Gothic in dark brick. The interior: a twenty-five meter high nave with whitewashed walls that makes those who enter feel uncomfortable and expect something else. The altarpiece, one of the most impressive in Scandinavia, is made of oak and has four floors. The pulpit is seventeenth century. Where is the baptismal font wonderful walls. In the church there is also a very clean bathroom for users

St. Peter’s Church is 700 years old and is incredibly well kept. The exterior belies the beauty of the church inside. Pictures are allowed but no flash, reminders for visitors are there to be respectful because it is an active church. You can purchase a small candle to light and say a prayer. There is a small area next to the information desk with religious items for purchase. I highly recommend visiting there while in Malmo.

When I first entered, I thought it was just a beautiful building exterior and an ordinary church. After entering, I found an IKEA mouse doll leading a treasure hunt. During the treasure hunt, I could learn about the history of the church. The children said it was very interesting. So much fun. When you find a treasure at the end, you can exchange it for a sticker. This kind of visit setting is very impressive for children and is worth visiting.

Don't miss this wonderful place.
If possible be there when the organ is being played. It is a stunning modern instrument the likes of which we had never seen before. It was restored by public subscription - what generosity.
The rest of the building is also amazing and the Pearls of Life, new to us, were heart-stopping.

Worth a visit. Wonderful modern organ which was being played during our visit. Ancient (1480-1510) murals in a chapel which are fantastic.

After reading other reviews, we wanted to visit this church and we were not disappointed. We came on a Sunday, wanted to attend services, but could not find the times. Unfortunately, we arrived too late. However it should be noted that he church does hold services and they do invite the public. Despite our arrival right after church let out, all of the tourists were warmly welcomed, I saw some of them snapping pictures which seemed fine with them---they never asked for a penny. I took the cue from another reviewer and donated money because of their kindness to us.
On the outside, the church has great flying buttresses (around back) . The surface of the church looks like it has been through it--remember it is hundreds of years old. When you walk in, the church is startlingly bright and airy for such an old building...ethereal. The workmanship is incredible--what a pretty church. The intricate paintings on the ceilings and crypts are to your left and then back...very close. They were very different from any ceiling paintings I have ever seen--and I have seen many. I thought they were charming--photos don't capture that.
Worth a visit!! Right near train, shopping, and city center.
