This library has an amazing reading room with a wall of windows overlooking Kungsparken. They have lots of events with authors there as well.

If you're looking for somewhere quiet to read today's paper, borrow a book or just use their computers to check email, look no further. Free of charge, of course, since it's a public library run by the city. They also arrange a number of seminars, such as an interview with Margaret Atwood at my last visit. Many of these are available online later.

The Malmö Library (stadsbiblioteket) have started cleaning out among books that are no longer considered suitable. They are not burning the books – only hiding them in the basement and only giving them to you on request. Stay away from this kind of politically oriented libraries.

For you who are a foreign visitor this library is a good place for you to understand why most of us people living in Sweden gladly pay our high income taxes - because we get so much back:
A public library, no fees, no membership, free for absolutely everybody
Stellar architecture (the modern parts are by the same architect who planned the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen and the Concert Hall in Uppsala)
A great collection of books, probably also in your language, as well as audio material
Free computers and free wi-fi
Good value- cafe.
A fantastic place for learning, relaxing, meeting people, and feeling good. "High on the ceiling -
Seein' is believin'" (a quotation of lyrics by the American singer Anya Marina) - in the Malmö city library the ceiling is truly high!

I enjoyed this library although I am English speaking. The library is full of light and space. Conducive for reading for children and adults alike!

This library is located in an absolutely beautiful building.
However at the end of he day it is still a library. There is lots of space to sit and relax if you like that.

One of the few highlights of Malmö. Probably during my car was broken into in "secur" Petri P-Hus, my family and me enjoyed a good time with playing, reading and drawing. A family friendly place!

If you are interested in public education, the Scandinavian tradition of free libraries for all, or modern architecture I would recommend you to pay a visit to the impressive Stadsbiblioteket, the city's public library.
It is situated just south of mediaeval Malmö Castle and the adjacent public park Slottsparken, both attractions in their own right, and in easy walking distance to Malmö's old city, separated from Gustav Adolfs torg (square) just by Gamla Kyrkogården (cemetery).
The library complex consists of three buildings in very different style. The older one from the early 1900s is inspired by Danish and Southern Swedish renaissance castles, the new second one, called The Cylinder is almost windowless, and the third one, also new, a glass cube, seems inspired by Bauhaus not unlike a gigantic Apple Retail Store.
Henrik Larsen, a Danish architect who is famous for, between other projects, the concert hall in Uppsala and the opera house in Copenhagen, has in an apparently effortless way tied together these three very different styles and buildings very elegantly.
Inside you get a physical example of the Scandinavian concept of free and universal education for everyone, where a huge collection of books and all sorts of multimedia are held available for studying and home borrowing for free, or I should rather say the taxpayers' money, a public space which is frequented by families with small children, students, geeks, business people, pensioners, immigrants, and everybody else.
There are many nooks where comfortable seating invites you to emerge yourself into some interesting material you just have found on a shelf, a very nice department for kids of all ages, and a good cafe. Take the elevator to floor three and enjoy the view through the glass panels over to the parkland, see how natural lights falls in, how "the rooms in the room" cleverly resemble book shelves, and enjoy the atmosphere.
This is a perfect example for why we in Sweden happily (or maybe grumbling) pay the high taxes Scandinavia is infamous for!

I like to visit public libraries and was pleasantly surprised to see an extensive English collection. Very nice interiors and exterior facade. Professional and helpful staff too.
