Landmark
Dec 2020
Opinions are quite devided on this one, but in my view it's architecturally appealing and complements the riverbank very well. It houses several cultural institutions, a hotel and a couple of eateries. Whether you like it or not, it's a new landmark of the city and it's here to stay.

Umeå’s new landmark
Nov 2018 • Couples
The Väven cultural centre is centrally located in Umeå. The Umeälven river is on one side and the city’s heart on the other side.

The city library occupies floors 2-4 and on the 4th floor is also the Women’s history museum.

There are also two hotels, the historic Stora Hotellet and the new U&Me Hotel on floors 6–13.

Kulturtorget (the culture square) is located at the street level. It is a large indoor square under a glass roof, fully integrated with the new cultural centre and the hotels. There are some restaurants, bars, cafes, and a bakery.

Best place to eat outside in Umea
Jul 2018 • Solo
This is a beautiful area of Umea. When I visited it was really packed out as it’s a popular place to eat lunch. There is loads of seating available and also some grass areas. There were families there, as well as business people. There are a few cafes and restaurants located around. I highly recommend stopping by.

Better inside
Mar 2017 • Solo
My rating had to be average but there is nothing average about it. Had it been possible to rate it terrible and excellent at the same time I would have.
There is no way to miss the building, but it is actually possible to miss some of the entrances, or not find the right one. It is even possible to enter the wrong part of the building, and then not find the right one from inside. That is not so strange, it passes over a road, which is not a bad thing in itself, but confused visitors might find themselves looking out the window at the place they want to go with no idea how to get there.
Lots of interesting materials have been used all over, there is no forgotten space that is just boring and normal. If there would have been ways to clean and care for these materials too, it would have been even better. Now there are rubber furniture that look decades old already, worn out wooden floors, and the floor in the café had to be removed and is just bare concrete now. Others in the library are warped from water damage, and it's so sad in a building this new and this expensive.
The way the building looks, well, you like it or you don't. It dominates this part of Umeå either way. The way it has been connected to the older buildings around it feels better on the inside than from outside at least.
And well, it has a library, that's a good thing. Not a really cosy library, but at least finding books is relatively easy. There is an art exhibition space in the middle of the library as well. Folkets Bio lives here too, with two theaters with movies that will not find their way to the mainstream movie place. The Womens History museum should maybe have been called just Womens Topics museum, but still, another good thing. Next to the café there is a rather big stage. So a bunch of good stuff inside.
And there is no denying that the view to the river side is great.

Hi there, Thank you so much for your rating and response of your visit to Väven. The exterior of Väven is a constant topic, both from visitors and people living in Umeå. Some of them like it, some don't. Either way, we like the fact that the exterior really makes an impression, both good and bad, just the way the architects intended it to. The house itself is, as you say, a bit confusing at first. People get lost and don't always find the right entrance or exit. We are constantly trying to improve the signs and mapping of the house and we are always there to help guide our guests. But maybe getting lost isn't always a bad thing, maybe you find something unexpected. Thank you for your opinion about our materials on the inside, we are trying to improve that as well so your opinion about it is really important to us. By the end of august the floor in FIKA will be replaced by a new wooden floor, after a water damage during the winter. Same goes for the floor at the 4th level. Once again, thank you for your opinions, and your visit. I hope you had a good time and would like to come back. Kind regards Jenny Vinsa

A place to visit, with a lot to offer
Jan 2017 • Couples
Really nice place, with interesting exhibitions, and a huge variety of books, in any language! Also, on the top floor, there is a small museum on Women´s History. There are cafés and restaurants, and also cinema.

Väven-visit in October
Oct 2016 • Solo
I visited Väven twice during my stay in Umeå. I had a look at the open and nice museum, listened to a book presentation inside the museum and the next day I visited the museum of womens history and the cafe "Fika" at the bottom floor. Väven seemed to be a cool place open for everyone! I do recommend a visit into the buidling just because of its interesting architecture. It is easy to take the lift upstairs to the upper floors (the library and the museum). As the building has a strange form arching over a street, there is two entrancies, on both sides of the buidling and of the street. One entrance is close to the citycenter and another on the riverside by the café. The café was okay too. The personel was helpful all over and really wanted you to make the most of you visit! Great wiews over the Ume-river.
