On a late December morning 9am it was absolutely freezing cold in here. The wind was blowing from the sea and it was -15°C. Nevertheless the old crane was impressive. You can see some icebreakers on the other side of the bay.

It was a brilliant Saturday morning. I walked to the quayside where Ingemar, the driver of the bus the previous day from Haparanda, had pointed out the ice-breakers. By the old Harbour Crane was a very interesting display that explained a lot about ice breaking, why it was necessary, the different kinds of sea ice and where and when it occurred. I learnt about the different bits of the Baltic Sea. I learned that Oden, one of the five icebreakers at Luleå, is the only non-nuclear vessel to have reached the North Pole.

It's a nice walk round by the harbour. The crane isn't all that impressive, but the history behind it is perhaps.

This crane dominates the landscape in Luleå - if you take one of the cruises into the archipelago, you can determine how far away you are from the downtown core by looking at the crane slowly receding onto the horizon. The Old Harbour Crane, and the city cathedral, are the two main landmarks to the city from the water.

This is a lovely area of Lulea on the coast. They have made a real effort with the space around the old crane. It’s a really colourful area with fountains, a skatepark, some cafes and loads of seating. You can also get the ferry from here. When I visited they were building some toilets. There are also some information boards around the area about UNESCO World Heritage sites.
