I was looking for a dive centre that could offer a personalised approach as I wanted to avoid being lumped in with a large group of mixed ability divers.

Gaulos Dive Cove seemed to fit the bill, and after a good chat with Mario, he put together an excellent package of 18 varied dives that took in not only the headline sights, but also the lesser dived reefs and caves as well. This was exactly what I was looking for.

So, a great all round package, but a few things stood out.

Firstly, timing. Some of the more famous dive sites (rightly) attract a lot of attention, but with Mario, many times we were the only divers there. To have sites such as Billinghurst cave, the 3 wrecks at 40m and Double Arch pretty much to yourselves is quite something.

Secondly, very good dive profiles that managed to maximise bottom time whilst making good use of available gas, so some great dives with a decent amount of time at 35-40m with a time in water that could approach 60 minutes.

Thirdly - Mario knows where the fish are. Dropping in on a huge school (or is it shoal, not sure) of Barracuda was particularly memorable but on every dive we would see spectacular and varied sea life.

The dive shop is also well stocked with widgets and the like and I managed to pick up a couple of pieces to improve my kit.

Anyway - I've been diving since 1998 and in places as varied as Jordan, Thailand and many times around the Maltese Islands and would put this trip well up with the best.

Definitely one of the best diving experiences I have ever had! Mario was very patient, professional and knowledgeable. He was especially kind to schedule me for a dive with fairly short notice. He picked me up to take me to the dive shop and even dropped me off at the end of the day so I could rejoin my group!

I hadn't been diving in a few years so I decided to take the refresher course and it was super helpful and informative. I would highly recommend it to those who are getting back into diving! The course was well paced and Mario always made sure his explanations were very clear. It is easy to see that he is an excellent instructor!

The dive equipment was very clean, up to date and in excellent condition! The dive center was well organized and accommodating.

During the dive, Mario always made sure I was safe and comfortable. He was very familiar with the fish and other creatures in the area and he made sure to point them out throughout the dive! The dive site was absolutely stunning and fit perfectly with my experience level!

I highly recommend Gaulos Dive Cove to anyone looking for a memorable, high quality dive experience! I would definitely like to come back for some more dives the next time I am in Malta!

I was diving with Mario based on recommendation of my wife...She was very happy and so was I!

Mario, as a local, knows everything about the dive spots, best time/conditions to visit them, way to reach them etc. And delivers, good, relaxing dives, no rush/stress just fun.

Diving with Mario was also social event, he would pick me up from the ferry, we visited his shop and house, had lunch together...that was fun - so much better than diving with larger groups packed in small cars and led by passionless dive masters/instructors.

If you want personalized diving experience combined with social fun and having the local flavor - I strongly recommend you call Mario and schedule your dive.

Cheers,

Piotr

Mario, Richard and Marina are very kind and professionell.
Not so many people on one diveplace with one guide, transfer every day.
I have had great Dives and felt me safe with this Dive center.
And i know Richard from other divebase in gozo, he is a perfect dive guide for nudibranchs ;) He written a brook about diving in gozo.
Mario was born in Gozo and so he know the island very good.
Marina is a biologist and very kind and helpful, i had fun with hoer :)
I can high recommend this diving center!

Well this was the total experience and after contacting Mario the owner about possibly of diving and where to stay on Gozo Island and he went out of his way to recommend accommodation and diving sites.
They picked up up from our accommodation in Xlendi and took us to his shop where we were fitted with the latest diving equipment including computer.
Richard was to be out guide for the day and with 12 years experience diving Gozo knows the dive sites and this showed through by how enjoyable experience we had.
This company only takes small groups to ensure all the needs to your individual abilities are are catered to.
We are experienced divers and to be shown that they recognise this by not treating us as amateurs was commendable.
We will use this company next time over here 10 out of 10

We always come back and dive with Mario. He is very experienced both in technical and practical diving. He knows the dive sites as he was born and brought up on the island. The kit is Aqualung and it feels and looks brand new. He can service regulators and is acredited with nitrox filling. My son did his nitrox course with Mario this year and between the 4 of us we did over 48 dives. There are lots of dive centres and lots of instructors on the island, but if you want the safest best dives, look no futher.

For me Gaulos was a chance find and a magical one at that. Initially I was going to use one of 2 of the bigger centres on Gozo. I happened to stumble across Mario's little gem while I was looking for accommodation.

Mario may only have a small operation, but as they say big isn't always best. From my first email to Mario to my final day of my diving trip I can say I am impressed. Mario responds to emails quickly an answers any questions you have. He arranged my transfers from the airport to and from Cirkewwa. Mario met me the other side in Gozo, then dropped me off at the end of my holiday. Each dive day you are picked up and dropped off.

Mario, being born and bred on the island knows it off the back of his hand. He knows of places others don't know about. As well as knowing the dive sites inside out, his knowledge of Goo is second to none. I was fortunate to join him and his instructor Andrea on my last night at a local feast (festival).

Diving with both Mario and Andrea is a pleasure. They take safely seriously, the dives are enjoyable. Where possible the dives are varied and they try and do the sort of diving the customer enjoys. This isn't always possible due to mother nature. For safely they do plan B, which is a great alternative. They make sure you are comfortable with the dive site as well.

I had the privilege of diving alone with both Mario and Andrea, it was like I was diving with a good friend. I met other divers who were returning customers. These dives said since finding Mario's little gem, they would be sticking with him. I can only agree. I can't wait to go back. I will be returning. Mario also has local divers who dive with him. This speaks volumes.

Mario and Andrea thank you for making my 10 days at Gaulos Dive Cove a memorable one. I will be back.

I visited Gozo with my girlfriend in April. After a few days on the island we got too jealous of all the divers going into the georgous clear water. We have never dived before so i turned to google. That is when I saw the Gaulos Dive Cove and saw how many 5* reviews Mario had.

I E-Mailed him on a Saturday, wanting to do a 'try dive' before Tuesday, not expecting to have success. Mario responded the same day and not only said it was possible but also suggested when was better with the weather in mind.

On the day we ended up running about an hour later than we expected, I called Mario and he ensured that we didn't rush as there was plenty of time. When we arrived we filled out some forms with him explaining it all to us and went through the use of the equipment. I am by no means an expert, but the equipment looked pretty much new and Mario explained the use of it all extremely clearly ensuring we understood everything. It was clear that safety and us being happy/comfortable were his priorities. The theory element took about 90 minutes, with us trying the equipment out as well and then we headed to the dive site - a sheltered cove on the North of the Island.

When we arrived, Mario showed us where we were going and helped us put on our equipment. We firstly got in to chest height and tried going under and breathing from the tank. We then tried 3 skills (purging, losing the valve and clearing the goggles) in the shallows with Mario helping when needed and going at our pace. Once we were done there we heading out into the deeper water.

On the dive we went down to 10m and stayed diving for almost an hour. More than anywhere else advertises. We saw some stunning fish and had a really good explore of the seabed. The whole time Mario was checking we were comfortable and enjoying it. He even took my GoPro with him and took some incredible photos that we will treasure.

My girlfriend, who was a bit nervous for her first dive, was put at ease by his calm professionalism and ended up loving the experience. At all times Mario ensured we were happy and tailored the whole experience to us. For the whole afternoon it cost us €40 each which is incredible for the service we received. I really haven't seen a better customer experience anywhere else. We will make sure to go back when were next in Gozo. Thanks very much Mario!

There is plenty of competition offering dive experiences in Gozo but it would be hard to beat Mario's little business located near Victoria. I undertook a refresher class then two separate dives over two days. The attention, support and evident skill of native Mario (16 plus years) and his offsider kiwi Hogan was first rate.

A current medical cert was required (i had overlooked this) and Mario effortlessly had me seeing a nearby diving medico to address this Maltese issue.

The equipment all looked new - no tired and worn-out BCDs and wetsuits, nor chipped tanks here.

Dive groups were small so i received really personalised support. Great for learning. Great for safety.

Seas a tad choppy today at the Azure Window for my skill level - no problem, we dived at nearby inland sea, then for the second dive, drove across the island for a more appropriate experience out of the wind. Plenty of flexibility with these knowledgable locals to suit diver standards and weather conditions.

The colin family are back again. This time Mario was training my wife and daughter for Advanced open water and my son and I did the rescue diver course with Hogan. What brilliant nice clever instructors. If you want macho show offs then don't come here. If you want the best people to guide you, instruct you and give you heaps of confidence -even when you get Narcosis on a very deep dive as my son got, then this is the place. We wouldn't go anywhere else. The kit is brand new- aqualung. We always got to dive sites before anyone else.We trust these people with our lives - literally. Go to Gozo for the best diving and get these guys to guide you. You will not be disappointed.
