About
This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

The chapel is gorgeous. The altar, pipe organ and pulpit are ornate. The gardens are beautiful and the view of the castle across the lake is spectacular!Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 17, 2023

We arrived at 10 am for opening so not to many tourist which we liked. The castle did not disappoint, I am so happy that we took the day to spend at Frederiksborg to see how the other side lived.lol Afterwards we walked around the town of Hillerod and had lunch, which I would recommend, it was a day well spent. I would say you do not need to book a tour do it on your own at your own pace.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 28, 2023

The scenario is quite stunning, and in summer time is probably even better. The tour inside the castle is also quite interesting, going through the history of Denmark's monarchy.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 26, 2023
- HitheroadwithlilaLenexa, Kansas2,220 contributionsA Grand CastleOur tour continued to Frederiksborg Castle. In the Nordic region, it is considered one of the largest Renaissance residences. Although it is no longer occupied by royalty, the history surrounding this castle is fascinating. Several grand palaces were constructed by the order of King Christian IV, a respected ruler who named the property for his father, Fredrick II, who built an original structure on the site. When there was absolute monarchy, it is stated that Danish kings were anointed at Frederiksborg Castle Chapel and still considered The Chapel of the Royal Danish Orders of Knighthood. Seated on three islands, this famous castle boasts of beauty, a lake, and a vast garden. When the family departed the castle due to a fire in 1859, the location was restored and now is used as a museum thanks to the museum founder and financier J.C. Jacobsen and the Carlsberg Foundation. We had a two-hour time frame that was also split with an hour for lunch. I focused on the key rooms in the castle to visit so that I could return to our tour bus on time. Frederiksborg requires more than one hour to fully explore the wealth and beauty of this castle that comprises both the Museum of National History and the Danish National Portrait Gallery. Last minute note, dining at Café Valentin was well worth it. The food was hot with hearty portions. The best hot chocolate here will be hard to match anywhere.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 3, 2024
- AvidTravelerDeBary, Florida241 contributionsAmazing!Loved the self-guided tour of the castle and the gardens. Plenty of information was provided by scanning the QR code at the entrance and accessing the information about each room through your phone. Each room is rich with history and exquisite works of art work depicting the royals that ruled Denmark over many years. One of the most fascinating parts of the tour was getting up close and personal with many of the original sculptures that used to be afixed to the castle. Plan to spend 3 to 4 hours at the castle to do it proper justice. It is also just a short walk into town to visit some of the local shops and grab lunch at one of the many cafés. All of the docents that we encountered on the property were extremely friendly and helpful. I would recommend this castle over many of the others in the area. Tip: A free parking area is available by entering Batzkes Bakke in your GPS.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 11, 2024

The Great Hall was the highlight and was a bit crowded with tourists groups. You could however wait a bit until they left which we did. Spend some time inside, a lot of impressive rooms to explore full of paintings and furniture. I been visiting many times over the years. I also recommend to walk around the gardens behind the castle. Great view. Well worth a daytrip if you are staying in Copenhagen. Just 40 min with train. You can spend hours there.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2024
- Caroline LPLondon, United Kingdom1,625 contributionsAn amazing castle! It took us just short of an hour to travel on the train from our hotel near København. It was a nice journey and we used the day pass for both the train and the bus. It was worth the effort as this castle is definitely in my top 5 visited castles across Europe. Walking through this castle there was room after room and it’s evident that the Danes of old loved their portraits and I’m so thankful they did as we had the opportunity to see them here. Amazing room decor and ceiling art throughout as well. So glad I got to come here and I would recommend you visit too.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 3, 2024

I was struggling to decide which castle to visit, this one or Kronborg castle (UNESCO) so I visited both as part of a tour with Hamlet tours. This castle was by far superior and I wouldn't recommend Kronberg if you are choosing between the two!
There are some works on going to the front aspect of the castle, but none at the back from the gardens (which has the best view). The works have scaffolding around two spires which impair the view at the front of the castle.
The castle had a fire but was beautifully restored in the 1860's - every room is packed full of paintings and furniture and is decorated in different colours so each room looks different to the last. The descriptions of the rooms are just descriptions of the paintings. There is an audio guide but you need to download it onto your phone, so you need to take headphones with you - I wasn't aware of this so I recommend taking headphones as there are none to hire.
The third floor of the castle was a bit strange and I would recommend missing this part, particularly if you dont like modern art. None of the rooms are decorated like the previous floors and there is no furniture etc to see.
We couldn't see part of the ground floor as it was closed, with no reason, but it was on the castle map as somewhere to visit.
Entrance to the grounds was free. The best views are to the back of the castle, from the moat/lake and from the boxed hedges. Directly behind the boxed hedges there is work on going to what I think were fountains and that area had metal fences around it so I wouldn't recommend taking photos from behind this.
We spent about 2 hours here, but if you love paintings you will be here much longer.
Overall, this castle is in excellent condition both inside and out and was a delight to visit. It's a castle I highly recommend and it is definatley worth the trip out of Copenhagen.

From Copenhagen Main station buy an all day ticket - covers trains, buses, metros, about 150KR.
Get train to Hellsingor and from there a 301 or 302 bus at station, bus takes about 3 minutes to castle entrance.
Free lockers on site. No audio guides.
Gardens are free. With castle and gardens and bus, probably spend about 2 hours there.
Return to train station and get the train to Hillerod - one of the first platforms on your left to view Kronborg.

I didn't see nor was offered any audio guide so I didn't even know it was available, which was unfortunate. There was laminated info sheets in every room to read, however. At first I only noticed all the endless portraits which got tedious. However, many of the ceiling decorations are absolutely breathtaking and the intricately carved drawer sets, trunks, and other furniture, are truly outstanding! So I would definitely recommend a visit. (I went in August 2019 and had trouble getting there because there was work on trains and I had to figure out rerouting via buses and Metro; I had the Copenhagen 72-hour Card which was well worth it!)

The Castle is situated in Hilleroed in Northern Zealand. Paid parking is available within a short walking distance.
The original Castle was built by the Danish King Frederick II and later rebuilt and extended by his son, King Christian IV. The Castle houses The Museum of National History. The Museum was established by the brewer Jacobsen, founder of the Carlsberg Breweries, and The Carlsberg Foundation still runs the museum today.
At present a special exhibition “The Faces of the Queen” is shown to celebrate the 80th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II. A large number of interesting exhibits are shown, such as the Queens original watercolors used as illustrations in Tolkiens “Lord of the Rings”.
The Castle itself is of course also of great interest, especially the very beautiful Castle Chapel, which also houses the famous Compenius organ, and the Knight’s Chapel for the Orders of the Elephant.

Frederiksborg Slot is a good day trip out by train to Hillerød train from Copenhagen Central. The castle is an easy 20 minute walk from the station through Hillerød which is a nice little town worth exploring while you're there.
The building and grounds are definitely impressive and ornate in a typical European late renaissance/baroque/roccocco mash-up kind of way. It is definitely "of its day" but nonetheless disturbing when considered in contemporary values terms - a testament to being born into privilege, fighting other people of privilege, taking money from one's subjects for the privilege of ruling them and spending it on pompous magnificence (as described in the brochure).

I've been to many castles around Europe and this one really was enchanting. Perhaps it was because I visited on a crisp day with blue skies and snow all around, but I can't stress enough how beautiful it was.
With the Copenhagen card (includes entry fee) you can take public transport all the way to Hillerød and it's a short walk to the castle from there. The surrounding lake is stunning and was frozen over when I visited. There's a nice forest walk all around and once you actually enter the castle, there's countless gorgeous rooms full of paintings, decorations and stories. The chapel was probably the highlight, absolutely stunning.
You can easily visit this castle and Kronborg on the same day (take 1 hour train from Hillerød to Helsingør), but if you only have time for one then definitely go to this one.
I was enchanted the entire time.

Not recommended for families with small kids.
At the reception a rude grey hair lady instead of saluting, told my kids to not touch the robes of the reception. But that was not only it, when I entered, the day showed her empathy again by asking me to change the position of my camera bag to the front, so I don’t cause any accident and reinforced the message to keep kids under control, not touching anything.
Simply the perfect example of traditional Danish hospitality.
Nice castle, but poorly sinalized.
The Crew of the castle works as watchdogs, not as tourist guides.
Almost nothing is translated to English or other languages, like in many other places in Denmark.

We have viewed a number of castles in Denmark and the Baltic and this is our favorite. It still retains a significant amount of original furnishings and artwork and seems to have escaped the pillage and damage that many other castles have. It is the most sumptuously decorated castle with gorgeous carvings and paintings.
A high quality audio guide is available to download and listen from room to room, and each room had an easy to locate room number. This really made for a fun experience to listen to the recordings including commentary on architectural and design features as well as historical items for each room.
We ran out of time having paid for only 2 hours of parking, this castle is definitely worth more than that, I would say 3-4 hrs.

maybe if we had the audio guide it would have been better. It felt that we would move from one room with plenty of paintings to another room full of paintings. Nice bedrooms and bigger halls, but no wow effect

This castle is stunning both inside and outside, beautiful architecture and decor. It takes a long time to walk around everything, and I found that the focus of the audio guide on the paintings slightly boring after the first hour. This castle is still worth a visit though

At the museum we have lockers for your luggage. Only small bags will be allowed inside the museum and we kindly ask guests to place their bags in front of them, so they don´t touch the paintings and furniture by accident.
We hope you will enjoy your visit!

With the Copenhagen card did you get into Frederiksborg castle right away or were you assigned a time slot for entry later in the day? We're also coming in via train and are concerned about the time.
