In the castle Casemates the brooding figure looms large.
Seated with arms crossed and eyes shut he manages to still grasp a sword with one hand.
Legend has it that he will only awaken when Denmark is under threat from enemies. He will then arise and raise his sword.

To reach Holger you need to go to Kronborg Castle and there is an under ground route which takes you to HOLGER . One of the sites to see in Kronborg.

If you are into history and legends you must visit the casemates in Kronborg Castle and learn about the adventures of this legendary "danish" hero.
* other european traditions also claim Holger as their own. But I personally like the danish version :)

Holger Danske is just Holger Danske. A statue of a legend in Denmark, which sadly has taken a negative turn. And it cost money to see

Be prepared for a damp and cold underground experience.
The Danes believe that Holger the Dane is sleeping and will wake up and warn the Danes if Sweden tries to invade.
Soldiers were able to barricade themselves inside the casemates for weeks. They had room for horses and soldiers and there were provisions to feed 1,000 men for up to six weeks. The casemates were built in 1574-76, when the medieval fortress was rebuilt into the renaissance castle of Kronborg.

From the moment I read about this I just had to go and see it. Holger Dansk is the legend of a the Warrior who is sleeping and will awake to protect Denmark in her extreme time of need. The statue is supposedly that of Holger Dansk himself (at least the original was).
Worth seeing, Very atmospheric location and nicely placed in the Catacombs of Kronborg Castle.

It's just a statue hidden underground at Kronborg Castle. It did entice me to go and read a little about who Holger is but nothing impressive. The Danes seem to love him, though.

Better check if Holger is sleeping, if not Denmark is in trouble. The story is that Holger Danske always wake up to protect Denmark from "bad guys".

This is located in the basement of the castle and it well worth the walk because of the history of the legend.

The casemats are only lit by paraffin lamps, which gives this place a scary atmosphere. If you are lucky you can find some bads behind the statue. If you visit Kronborg don’t miss it.

What is the best way to travel to Kronberg Castle from Copenhagen?

By train. We got the train from Copenhagen Norreport direct to Helsingør (aka Elsinore in Hamlet). Took around an hour. Castle is less than 10-min walk from the station. Town is nice so you may want to factor in some time for that. We were at the castle for 2-3 hours.
