Kronborg is a must-see! “Hamlet’s Castle” is a magnificent experience with soaring towers, a huge ballroom, damp casemates and just 40 minutes from Copenhagen. At the narrowest neck of the sound, between Denmark and Sweden, the medieval fortress merges with the magnificent Renaissance castle and there are few sites in the world where so much drama and history is gathered in one place. Mythical hero Holger the Dane’s mighty sword meets Shakespeare’s equally mighty pen, as the spirit of Hamlet glides through the castle. No wonder this extraordinary place is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

My family (3 adults and 2 kids 4 and under) enjoyed our time visiting the castle. We bought tickets online and they were good for one visit within 1 year of the purchase date. The inside was beautiful to see and there was even a kid area about midway through for them to color and play. Strollers are not allowed inside the castle according to a sign we saw. The basement was neat to walk through. Nothing is really down there, but it was cool to see how the guards would live if they were under siege. You have a beautiful view from the tower (145 steps up) of the waters and Sweden. It was a cold day but well worth the visit.

The view from the tower is amazing so make sure you get up there when there is enough sunlight left (150 steps no elevator)
The castle is 45 minutes one way by train from Copenhagen central station and then a short 15 minutes walk from the train station (you will see it on your right when you exit the Helsingør Station). The train rides along the coast so on a sunny day is a great view on itself
Visiting the castle will take 1 to 2 hours depending on how much of the info you plan to read ...in winter there was no Hamlet show so you will have to account for that as well if visiting in another season
The maritime museum is right next door and is worth a visit as well (1 to 2hours needed) especially if you have the Copenhagen card given is all included (castle, maritime museum, train ride) . I think the castle open at 10 so you can leave Copenhagen by 9, get up there by 10:00 (10 am), spend 2 hours in there, have a snack-lunch (picnic area inside the castle is provided with a few benches-tables and there is a restaurant nearby), spend 1 or 2h in the maritime museum and head back to Copenhagen by 14:00 (2pm) and reach the city by 15:00 (3pm)

This visit is brought to life by two things. A cast of actors plays scenes from Hamlet around the courtyard and castle. They involve the audience as they go along. The exhibits are well labelled in Danish and English but really enhanced by the commentary you can listen to on your phone via the clever use of QR codes. It is worth preserving to set this up and seeking out the QR codes which are not always immediately visible.

One of the attractions of the famous fortress is the gallery of performances of Hamlet within his putative castle. Richard Burton in his 1954 role is great as is that other famous thespian John Gielgud.
Having seen the castle numerous times during our daytrip to Helsingør, it was delightful to visit it come evening time when it looked even more evocative.
A procession of fine rooms were on the visit, some with grand tapestries. A Royal Chapel is beautiful with exquisite wood carvings and a grand organ.
Its underground corridors and rooms, casemates, are worth exploring and here Holger Danske is to be seen.

Kronborg Castle dates back more than 400 years and the current castle was built by the Danish King Frederick II and later extended by his son, King Christian IV.
The Castle is located close to the Swedish coast, once part of the Danish Kingdom, and the Danish Kings had a solid income from Sound Dues from the ships passing the Sound.
Today the Castle is a museum and part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage.
During our visit a special exhibition by Jim Lyngvild, "A Royal History", was shown. Jim Lyngvild is a well-known Danish designer and artist and has made a great job creating beautiful costumes for a large number of historic persons. The special exhibition was excellent and on its own worth a visit.
The Castle itself is certainly also a very exciting and interesting sight with something for visitors at all ages. We spent several hours at the Castle and would definitely recommend this great Castle museum.

Kronborg Castle is an hour's drive from Copenhagen, so if you are visiting Copenhagen I recommend you visit it. Outside the castle, there is a beautiful territory, inside the castle everything is also beautiful and interesting. I especially liked the casemates! There are many castles in Europe, and some of them are more picturesque than Kronborg, but I have never seen such casemates. They very successfully recreate the atmosphere of the casemates of the old castle. There is little light, damp, dark and scary, as it should be. In short, this place is definitely worth a visit.

We hire a car and drove the scenic costal path road Gammel strand vej to Helsingør. Its a relaxing trip with architectural gems to visit along the way. If you have time you can stop at the Louisiana museum, re-fuel your car at Arne Jacobsen gas station and ice cream parlor and enjoy a stroll down one of the picturesque beeches.
The castle is stunning from the outside but maybe not as exciting on the inside. If you are low on cash you could give the ticket a miss and wander around the grounds.

Can’t really find the right words to describe this magnificent castle! From the moment you step out of the ferry (if you are coming from Helsingborg, Sweden), it stuns you with how majestic, huge and appealing it is! It was raining when i visited it, but i couldn’t care less. I wanted to get there and see it closely and it didn’t disappoint. It is hugeeeee and wonderful! The gardens around it, the colourful houses add to its charm and make this place the highlight of a trip to Denmark. A must visit!!

We went as a group of six friends to visit the castle without any expectations and it was one of our best days in Denmark. Shall we explain you why? The talented actors walking around the castle and their good acting made us fully live the Hamlet's experience. They made the plays personal and interactive what made it so fun to watch. We didn't want to leave the castle. It is a must to go there, and make sure you don't miss any of the acts!

Whether or not you're into history, this castle has something to offer (also for the kids). It was built in the 16th century and it's enormous. Staff offer short presentations/guided tours throughout the day, and they're free once you purchase admission (which is 145 kr/ adult). Download the app Useeum, which is excellent to listen to as you walk through the castle. Internet is not great at the site, since the walls are very thick, but then listen to it after your visit. Surrounding area is beautiful, so bring lunch and have a picnic.

While I don't use a wheelchair, I sometimes use a cane to help me get around. How difficult would it be to visit this castle if I didn't climb all the stairs to the tower?

Hi ! I'm going to Helsingor tomorrow and I've just seen that because we are in November the castle is close on Monday, I can not go there another day so I would like to know if it is possible to see a part of the castle, at least from outside, and have a walk around in closing days ?

You can see the castle from out side but it would be like looking at a delicious cake in the show case and not be able to taste it. It is far and if you dont have transportation then better you skit this trip. A picture post card would give you an idea of the castle.

Olha, eu não achei necessário fazer visita guiada. Mas o castelo é grande e bonito tanto por dentro como por fora. Recomendo ir de manhã, alomocar em Helsingor e ir de tarde no castelo que fica em Hilerod.

It is connected by bus and there is a combination of indoor and out door things to do and see. This is a must visit place in Copenhegan.

Ciao, i treni sono frequenti, fino a tarda sera. Ti conviene fare la Copenhagen card se vuoi visitare la regione di Copenhagen con l quale sono inclusi tutti i mezzi di trasporto pubblico e l'ingresso a musei, castelli, palazzi etc. Puoi farla di durata variabile ( dalle 24 ore fino a un massimo di 120 ore). Io te la consiglio. Buon viaggio!
