This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

- Eduardo G7 contributionsFlexible bike rental, with potential undesired issuesI rented a bike with Donkey Republic for a relative who was visiting. I did it through their website and then using the mobile app. This is what happened, in case it is helpful for someone facing a similar situation in the future: 1. The assigned bike (A) had the front brake broken. After noticing it, we locked the bike, returned into the same spot and ended the trip. In order to get reimbursed for it, I had to call support and manage to report them the problem and my username. In the mobile app there was no way of doing it. 2. We took a different bike (B), and that was OK. 3. We returned the bike as expected in the same spot as we picked it, after using it for the whole day. 4. Two days later, I received an email from Donkey Republic saying that they can not find the 'last bike rental' requesting me to provide the location and suggesting that if they fail in locating it they would charge me 250€ (or if I do not answer in less than 3 working days). 5. I sent the location where we dropped bike B. Then I realized that they were actually referring to bike A, although that was not my last bike rental. I decided to go to the bike location and I found it exactly the place where I left it, so I took a picture of it and sent it to them to be 100% safe. 6. Donkey Republic recognized the mistake and kindly apologized for the inconveniences. The rental experience was surely affected by these nuisances, that luckily were resolved satisfactorily at expenses of my time. The idea of having a completely flexible and affordable bike rental is great. However, these occurrences show that there is stuff that needs to be polished in its renting control for the benefit of the user.Hi, Eduardo! Thank you so much for your comprehensive feedback. There was, in fact, a bit of a misunderstanding in the communication about your cancelled and refunded rental, for which we apologise. The reason we reported the bike missing in the first place was that the next rider couldn't find it, but you helped us so much by sending the pictures. At the end of the day, we just want to make sure that more and more people benefit from using the bikes. That is why we're constantly working on improving our system - in part thanks to feedback from users like you. So thank you again and keep spreading the bike love!Written August 25, 2016This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2016Written August 21, 2016
- junhoooNusa Dua, Indonesia56 contributionsConvenient and Easy but expensiveCopenhagen. Was very easy to sign up and get started and drop off, one of the best ways to get from one end of town to the other without changing multiple forms of public transport but it’s not cheap. You’re paying for the convenience of them being everywhere as opposed to bike shop rentals you need to return them to that shop after. Good for short hires ie 1-2 hrs but it’s definitely not cheaper “the longer you hire”AVisited May 2019Traveled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2019
- Mi_and_SiYork, United Kingdom61 contributionsGreat idea - no issuesWe rented 2 bikes for one day from right outside our hotel. Then realised we'd use them the whole time we were in Copenhagen so rented another 2 for another 2 days (had to use different location as our original bikes had been rented). No issues with using the app and the locks worked every time (sometimes had to try locking or unlocking again if it didn't work first time but no problems with that). I would say that our first bikes were great and had baskets. Our second set of bikes were very new and had no baskets which was an issue when we had things to carry. You can't check what your bike has before you rent if you book online so I'd recommend checking the bikes out in your chosen location first if you can. I found the seat on the second bike very uncomfortable (couldn't change for one in the same location as they were all the same). The equipment worked well and seemed to be maintained.Visited July 2017Written July 10, 2017

BUYER BEWARE:
Donkey's app and lock system have errors, which can give you € 10 to € 180 fines. This happened to us:
We went to the cinema, and dropped the bike off in front of it. The app said everything was in order.
A few days later we get the message saying "you ended your rental with no connection to the lock and outside the drop off location". Neither was made aware to us in the app. Yet we got fined € 10.
So basically, the app fails to do its job, and you get fined.
Ridiculous.

Awful. 1 hr and still no bike. You need there app, you need WiFi, you need Bluetooth, you need to verify your email and phone, get an OTP. You need data roaming. Don't even try from a foreign phone. 2 calls to rude 13 year old in the helpdeak. Relaxing bike ride what rubbish. And they still charged for 1hr for both bikes even though it said trying to connect to Bluetoorth for 16mins. Unless you have a local sim with roaming and have a degree in IT... walk

Well I got a fine of 15e for leaving a bike for one hour outside of the drop-off location and bring it back to the drop-off location. Outrageous. And now they're talking about "Terms and conditions". Goodbye then. I hope you're happy with that 15 euros and making more effort to make that rule clearer.

Lame app, horrible customer service. I do not recommend it, this app is NOT trustworthy.
First I had problems unlocking the bike, but after all, it worked.
Later I simply couldn't lock the bike to finish the rental. I was there for over 20 minutes trying, following the instructions and nothing.
Tried to reach for help, but nobody answered me on the phone nor on the chat. When I finally managed to get some help (from a machine) it was useless and didn't solve the issue.
I've sent several e-mails, call their CS, tried on the chat and nobody got to me so far.
RESULT: I'm being charged non-stop as if I was riding the bike until now. It was yesterday, so for over 24h.

So easy to use! Simply download the app and head to the nearest bikes (often less than 5 minutes away). Unlock it with the app and your off! It’s so easy to use and the bikes were of good standard. Be wary if you’re not used to cycling on roads to familiarise yourself with the rules first. You could then lock your bike and leave it while you visited attractions then unlock it to presume use. After your done drop off areas are easy to come by and you pay for how long you use.

We had a great experience using Donkey bikes to explore all of Copenhagen. The bikes were (mostly) in good condition, and we found the app easy to use. Lots of pickup and drop off points all over the city, and amazing bike lanes for cyclists.
Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from but as long as you’re patient and thorough with the app the rules, it should be a smooth experience. Would recommend to anyone visiting Copenhagen.
Thank you Donkey bikes :)

If you rent a donkey bike without the insurance for stealing, this company will definitely will impose penalty fee.
This is my experience. I rented it in Sweden last September. After enjoying cycling, I returned it at an appropriate bike station using Bluetooth, proper way.
One month later, I received the email from Donkey customer center. They said that the bike that I rented was missing. I replied that I returned it at an appropriate bike station. But, of course, I am a traveler, it is impossible to visit there again. It means that only they can find the evidence.
They said that if the bike won't be found in a month, they will impose penalty fee, 180 euro. Although I replied that they should visit the place where I returned it, they didn't reply.
This month, I received email from Donkey. Since they couldn't find the bike, they demand 180 euro for compensation.
This is my worst experience ever story.
If you would like to give 180 euro to the company, I recommend to rent their bike.
That's ridiculous! Unfair!

Well, what can I say? We went to Copenhagen for a boys trip for several days at though this would be a great idea. What a mistake! From the start there were problems as one of the bikes automatically locked and we were unable to reopen it. This resulted in us having to rent a new bike. Extra cost! Then after several hours it happened again to another bike. At this point we had to rent two extra bikes unnecessarily. Not good. We wanted them for 24 hours. One overnight was stolen and we were unable to retrieve it. The quality of the bikes them self were awful. The brakes were rubbish and the locking system was a nightmare. Took 5 minutes to lock the bloody thing. The online help was good however I was very disappointed with the bike and not what I expected. Shame they treated us so badly.

This company is a scam. They have charged me for 9 bikes when renting only 3. Their booking app didn't work but still money was reserved on my card. I was promised a refund after a lot of work with getting in contact with their customer service. You can't reach the company through phone, only email.
After 6 days I still haven't received the money. Our supposed to be nice day in Copenhagen was ruined by the handling of this matter.
Some of the bike are in poor quality and the app doesn't always connect properly to the looks. We almost missed our train when returning the bikes, due to this.
I will not recommend this company. Chose a another rental option or take a walk!

By far the WORST experience of the whole trip. My boyfriend and I picked up one bike which I used and then went to find another for my boyfriend, which after riding for about a minute he realised had a flat tyre. We then wheeled that bike all the way to another stop and tried to change the bike- which we couldn’t because the GPS couldn’t find us even though we were in exactly the correct spot. Took about half an hour to even lock. Then couldn’t end my rental because the instructions were so poorly given and NO ONE helps from the customer service emergency number- they were all automated voices and then the line hangs up- terrible customer service. This whole experience made us late and therefore miss our tour around la Sagrada Familia and ruined the whole morning.

Hi guys,
Could anyone give me an idea on the total cost for the hire of two bike over two days? (we will be making regular trips into the city from the suburbs)
The app is extremely basic and the “pricing page” just shows up a blank screen! Thanks in advance

In Copenhagen I used Donkey Republic for the first time & was very happy with it! It was by far the cheapest option 22€/165 DKK for 7 days - in the app it is called „a lease plan“ which does not finish automatically, so one needs to actively terminate it (I did it right after I got my bike). The bikes are orange, hv a practical smartphoneholder for navigation, 3 gears and run easily. To unlock or lock your bike later on you need the smartphone app which communicates via bluetooth with the lock. So be sure to never run out of batterie. Also, I went very far so I do not think that there are any restrictions where you go or park. ONLY when you finally return the bike (after the rental/lease period, for me it was after 5 days) u cannot just park it anywhere. Instead the app will indicate a spot nearby. I left it at the main train station but there where many other spots too. Altogether a very easy & cheap system to rent a bike in Copenhagen 👌👌👌

Are the bikes suitable for a small teenager? What’s the minimum height to be able to ride the bikes?

Are Donkey Bikes allowed on the Metro? Also, i know you can lock it "anywhere" during a rental, but can you ride it "anywhere" to (as in, is there a limit how far from Copenhagen you can ride, given their are trails all over Denmark. Thanks!

Will be in Copenhagen and want to know if bikes can be returned to different locations?

Hi Kat!
Yes, you can add the Flex Drop-off option to your rental which enables you to return the bike(s) to different drop-off locations. Keep in mind that not all pick-up locations have this option available. If you're having troubles finding a convenient pick-up location that has Flex Drop-off available, feel free to contact us by phone or Facebook chat. Thank you and hope you'll have a great ride!
