The area

Neighborhood: Amager
In the eastern part of this neighbourhood, visitors will discover Amager Strandpark, a beach area which has become increasingly popular. It’s only a 30 minute bicycle ride or a 10 minute Metro trip away from the city center. Only a few hundred yards inland, some of the most creative musicians, artists, and writers in Copenhagen are occupying some of the old storage houses and production facilities. The western part is one of Copenhagen's most rapidly evolving areas, here you’ll find international architecture of the highest rank, the state of the art TV-Byen (the Danish pendant to BBC), a golf course as well as Copenhagen's best (and tiniest) ice bar.

So Intricate, what a tremendous piece of inventive engineering, We did think it would be worth seeing but it was far better than we anticipated. The story is also compelling with some tragic aspects so common in many of these pieces the brain behind it never get to see the designs in operation.
The town hall tower was closed in April but this exhibition means you should still visit the venue. So glad we went past on our way to Tivoli. Heartily recommend don't miss it if you like fine engineering and beautiful timepieces.

A masterpiece of watchmaking, designed and calculated by Jens Olsen. It was launched in 1955, but its creator died before seeing it completed. You can calculate the weather in different countries, dates and planetary positions. It has more than fifteen thousand pieces in operation and a golden color that stands out. It is displayed in a display case in the Copenhagen City Hall building. You only have to wind it once a week for the next two and a half thousand years and it will continue to give the exact information.

This is a very interesting clock and it's located very near Tivoli and Central Station. Information in English is posted near the clock and there is ample seating to sit and admire the clock. It's definitely worth stopping in to see if you're on your way to Tivoli Gardens or Central Station.

An astronomical clock that can be seen if you visit Copenhagen Town Hall. It looks very interesting and unusual. Free to visit, as the Town Hall is also. No need more than 10 minutes to see it.

Not to be missed sight located inside the City Hall with free entry. A masterpiece of clock making with accuracy only bettered by an atomic clock!

What this masterpiece calculates and shows is truly remarkable. From planets positions to global times and dates and so very much more.
Wholly mechanical, it is now a museum piece given that its functions have long been superseded by atomic clocks and electronics.
Nevertheless it is a wonder of ingenuity, being one of the most precise of its kind anywhere. Its provenance is inspiring.
Jens Olsen began as a locksmith and was intrigued by a clock he saw on a visit to Strasbourg during the last years of the 19th century. He vowed to create one for his home country.
Over the next decades he became a master clockmaker and progressed the complex calculations needed for his masterpiece.
Unfortunately he died in 1945, ten years before the setting in motion of the clock by King Frederick IX and Jens's youngest grandchild Birgit.
Different gears in the mechanism revolve from a fast ten seconds to an astonishing interval exceeding 25,000 years. Provided the clock is wound every week.

This astronomical clock is beautiful and is a major feat of engineering. However, it looked like it stopped working in 2017, based on the date on the clock itself. If it is important to see it working, you might want to check beforehand. We were already near City Hall (which is close to Tivoli) so it was worth stopping in to see it. Copenhagen really needs to get this amazing clock moving again!

The clock is located to the right of the entrance of the city hall. If you are unaware of the existence of the clock you are 100% likely to miss it. Despite its history the clock failed to impress me. Maybe it would if it was on the move.

Like one of the reviews indicated, the building from the distance seemed to be a church. Entering it you realise it is anything but a place of worship, but worth a visit.
The Jens Olsen Astronomical Clock is itself worth a visit. Don't missit.

At what time of day can you get into city hall to see the clock?

Shortly after it opened in morning. There was no line. Many people walk right by it
