Philip took our extended family of 15 (ages 18-78) on a great Jewish walking tour of Copenhagen. He was very knowledgeable of the long ago Jewish history of the city and was able to make it personal by sharing his grandfathers’ stories of survival from WWII, plus the current state of the Jewish community. The tour included the outside of the Great Synagogue, Copenhagen University, Trinity Church and Round Tower, Christianborg Palace and Stables and inside the Jewish Museum of Denmark. We took the tour on Saturday afternoon so we did not go inside the synagogue (but we had been there for services in the morning) and we had prepaid for entry fees for the Jewish Museum. We would highly recommend Philip and Jewish Copenhagen tours for an intimate tour of the city.

It was a great tour performed by Pia Litwar. She is an amazing woman whose parents were saved from death during Holocaust. I had a 3 hour tour and didn't even got tired. We started at the synagogue, went through the Jewish community Center, walked around the city and ended in a Jewish museum. In the synagogue Pia brought me to the Torah arch and let me hold a key from aron kodesh. It was an original key which has been used since 1833. It was very intense and impressive. Pia also showed me a booth with some personal belongings which belonged to her own family . She told me the whole story of Danish Jews. Among 5,5 mln citizens of Denmark, less than 0.5% are Jews. Though the number of them is so small, the Jewish history of Denmark is outstanding, and their impact in Danish economy and culture was amazing. I am thankful to my guide for so many interesting stories related to Jewish history - story of Hans Christian Andersen and his friendship with Melchior family, story of the Heyman brothers, Nils Bohr etc. We visited old Danish home yards and even found ourselves in a tiny jewelry shop - a hidden jewel of Old Copenhagen. I highly recommend this tour to those who is interested in Jewish history.

We met Bente at the Danish Resistance Museum, which was a great place to begin. The museum is a gem and Bente's explanations and descriptions enhanced the experience. The many stories Bente told about her family and then about the Nazi Occupation and the ensuing rescue of the many Jews were captivating. In Dragor we walked through the small town to the harbor and there saw the fishing boat that had carried her grandparents and so many others to safety. it was an emotional ending to a wonderful tour.

Our family found this tour extremely informative and fun. Bente was a very good tour guide and was able to tell the story of Jewish Copenhagen over several hours that kept us fully engaged. Her ability to weave in the experiences of her own family made the history come alive. Really enjoyed the additional car trip to Dragor as well.

While it was lovely to see the inside of the synagogue, we felt the tour was very overpriced for the value we received. We had some knowledge of the history of Jewish Danes and barely added to that based on the guide’s input. Beyond the synagogue, there was not much else to see.

Dear Marnie You are right, everything in Denmark is very expensive. For a 1.5-hour tour, it's naturally not possible to see as many sights as you would on a 3-hour or 5-hour tour. During the 1.5-hour tour, our guide introduced you to daily Jewish life in Denmark, including a visit to the marvelous Copenhagen Synagogue and Jewish community center. You also passed the Round Tower with its golden Hebrew inscription and stopped at the church where all the Torah scrolls from the Synagogue were hidden during WWII. Additionally, you learned about the incredible rescue of Danish Jews during WWII, with personal insights from your guide Pia. Other notable sights included the statue of Niels Bohr and his impact on the rescue of Danish Jews, the stumbling stones and the story behind the project, and many more. We are sorry that you felt you did not get enough value for your money after the tour. Best regards, Charlotte

What a fantastic tour! Pia is an excellent tour guide who weave in her family's history into the story of the Danish Jews. Her life long experiences all come together with the stories of the Danish Jewish Community.

It was quite enjoyable to walk through Copenhagen hearing about the history and seeing the important sites. The tour was the perfect amount of time and was laid out perfectly starting at the great Synagogue and ending at the Jewish Museum. And, having the stories Pia shared come to life at the museum was incredible. We even had the good fortune of meeting one of the children left behind in the 1940s when her family departed to Sweden for safety. While not a planned meeting, the opportunity to meet living history was incredibly moving and it brought Pia's stories to life. Highly recommended tour and tour guide!

The entire tour was excellent. Charlotte has an excellent knowledge of Danish Jewish history as well as a willingness to share her family’s personal stories. We felt that the visit to the Danish Resistance Museum was very valuable. The highlight was visiting the synagogue and learning about the history and current status of the Copenhagen Jewish community.

We took the Jewish Heritage Tour in Copenhagen with our guide, Pia, beginning the tour at the Synagogue and ended it at the Jewish Museum (designed by the architect, Daniel Liebeskind). Pia told us the history of the Danish occupation during WWII and that almost the entire Jewish population in Denmark was saved by their King. The people were hidden in small fishing villages and then ferried by small boats across to Sweden. It was fantastic to have Pia as our guide, as she’s an active member of the Copenhagen Jewish community and has personal ties to the events during World War II. We highly recommend this tour!

We were fortunate to have connected with Charlotte Thalmay shortly before arriving in Copenhagen. It was our first visit and we were anxious to explore and learn about Denmark’s Jewish history as well as cultural sights. On one day, we combined the Jewish tour with the city tour. Our guide was Bente who’s company we enjoyed as she shared local history as well as her family’s story. On another day, we left Copenhagen with Marielle and an excellent driver to visit Ryvangen Memorial Park, Ordrupgaard and Louisiana Museum. Marielle shared her love and knowledge of the museums as well as her family history.
Charlotte was extremely helpful and flexible. She also gave us several excellent restaurant recommendations. We highly recommend the tours, our guides and Charlotte Thalmay
