Slotsholmen is an islet in central Copenhagen, the site of the first royal castle. While fires destroyed earlier palaces, the glorious Christianborg Slot (built 1907-1928) remains today. It is currently the home of the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court and Prime Minister’s office. There is much to see on Slotsholmen, including Christianborg Slot, the views from its tower, the equestrian statues of Christian IX and Frederick VII, the old stock exchange and Thorvaldsens Museum. Several bridges allow easy access to Slotsholmen. A major destination in Copenhagen.

I had no idea that the island was so beautiful! Aside from the historic palace and museums, the gardens are lovely to sit and relax in

A very pretty - and not too rigorous - area to take a walk. And if you are lucky, you can see some of the horses as they come out from the stables to exercise. Beautifully kept grounds. Many photo opportunities.

The ruins of Bishop Absalon's 1167 castle, Christiansborg Castle, Ministry of Finance, the Stock Exchange and Royal Library, along with several other sites, are all on Castle Island which makes it a mandatory destination for visitors.

In this area of the city it's possible to go on a boat ride on the canal, visit Christiansborg Palace Church and Tower, the Royal Stables, the Parliament, Holmens Kirke (The Naval Church), see Bishop Absalon's statue, and many other sights. If you are a tourist in the city, you are certain to visit this area.

We took a pleasant walk from our hotel to visit this locale late on a grey, cool, summer's afternoon. This was a good time to visit as there were not many tourists around while we were there.
It was great to be able to take photographs of the splendid public buildings in the area without being hindered by crowds of tourists.
There were also many photo opportunities next to the canals. Plenty of interesting small boats and some swans and seagulls to be seen.
A great area to get away from the "madding crowd" if you pick the right time of day!

We walked around Christianborg Slot, which sits on this island. There is a lot to see - the equestrian yard, the beautiful architecture, the chapel in Christianborg, and the garden next to the library. You can see all of this without paying admittance. The buildings are beautiful and impressive, too!
