About
Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art is the house of the artists and shows exhibitions that are produced, initiated or chosen by artists. Den Frie is especially focused on contemporary artistic communities, collective exhibitions, artists associations and experimental groups and networks. The house is built by artists for artists and today strives to make an interesting and varied exhibition programme, that challenges the exceptional architecture of the building. 10 exhibitions are shown each year, most of them group exhibitions. Apart from those, soloexhibitions with either younger, promising artists or artists, that have made important contributions to art history are presented.

Address
Neighborhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

We heard somebody talking about this museum in the train. As the location just across the Østerport station, we decided to visit it. Beautiful place, big space for exposition. It is a "must" for one who likes modern art.

Visited this place for the first time recently. Quite a remarkable building near Østerport station. I found the building quite interesting - outside as well as inside.
The exhibitions inside was of a more experimenting nature and I think some people may feel quite disappointed. I thought it was ok, but that the quality varied a lot. Maybe because of my general lack of knowledge within art and architecture.
So may be most obvious to visit if you have an interest in the field of new and somewhat experimenting art.

Museum Den Frie presents the exhibtion Den Frie Udstilling in March/April every year. Some years it is really great, other years it is not worth the time. This year (2017) it was a mix. Some extremely nice things and some not so nice. The rooms are as always perfect. Looking forward to next year.

The museum is not worthwhile: the artworks are a weird combination of a bit of everything, not fascinating at all. Even the cafe in the museum was not our taste - not worth the money

Great place. Set up by artists over a hundred years ago and still going strong. Superb building and high calibre shows. Right next to Osterport station so easy to get there. Good selection of books.

Unbelievable that the price to get in Den Frie is the same price near enough as The Viking Museum - an INCREDIBLE place full of ancient treasures where we wondered for hours. We were expecting something along the lines (but smaller) of The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam - Den Frie in comparison is tiny and completely amateurish.

Unfortunately this was one of the low points of our Copenhagen 3 day break. It wasn't the building itself that was the problem but the content. We saw the 80th anniversary exhibition - one can only hope that the previous 79 were rather better. Try as we might, we just couldn't get our heads round what we saw - our loss I'm sure. And as for what was going on in the basement gallery...! The basement café was pretty dismal too, manned by a young man who clearly didn't enjoy being there.

I expected to really love this museum, but the exhibitions were ... meh. Nothing fabulous was on while we were there. I'd go again to see the new exhibitions, though.

This is not contemporary art, these are scriblings of amateurs, below the level of an average 5-years old. A pure waste of time

This is a rather strange place featuring "modern and contemporary" art and even though I consider myself very open minded, the exhibits were rather strange and verging on grotesque.
The place is small and it was strangely hot inside. It has a small shop and cafe but nothing really noteworthy.
Not a place I would recommend.
