the works and collections of the great classicist sculptor Thorvaldsen who lived most of his life in Rome, but donated his Collections to Copenhagen- actually the first public museum here. The building itself was built by M.G. Bindesbøll in 1839-48 with Sonne's remarkable murals showing the receiving of Thorvaldsen on his return in 1838. He is buried in the courtyard

Going into the Thorvaldsen Museum is like meeting the great and the good of the early nineteenth century, all the celebs living in Rome, penurious East European aristocrats and some very doubtful characters. The place rings with the cries and laughter of children who at first sight one would expect to be daunted by the monumental marbles and plaster casts... More

You are absolutely right that the sculptor himself, Bertel Thorvaldsen, is buried right in the middle of our museum. We very much appreciate your great review and hope to welcome you again some time! :-) More

Sculptures, lots of them. Many are plasters, some are actual stone. Style wise, not so much variety as they are all pretty classical. The building layout feels a little strange, but is interesting in it's own right.

We thank you for your review. Indeed, the building is quite something of its own, and the atmosphere here is often not like anything our quests have ever visited before. More

This museum is amazing! Thorvaldsen was a phenomenal sculptor. His attention to detail was excellent. One thing I really noticed was his statues' hands. All were perfectly carved, something that many artists have struggled with. This collection was so much fun to look around, and so much of his work is dedicated to my favourite ancient myth, Cupid and Psyche,... More

A huge collection of incredible sculpture plus Thorvaldsens' own collections (Egypt art, coins, etc.). The main gallery includes huge sculptures (or plaster models of statuary located in major cities or museums). Some stand over 20 feet tall. The main gallery is used for weddings - how incredible would that be?!

Thorvaldsen was a world known sculpturer in the middle of the 19th century, every royal and emperor had him make sculptures of them. Facinating display of his works.

The building interior, sculptures, and paintings restored the sunshine to a wet Sunday! Fortunately we saw the amazing ceilings through the windows the previous night and came back to get a better look.
