Great area to stroll through. There are cafes, shops, and canal-side seats. Early in the morning, saltier residents relax by the water. Later in the day, cafe people-watching increases. There's a really nice grocery store right by the metro stop, and there's a Carlsberg boat nearby the intersection, too. Great variety of interests.

If you have the time this area is well worth a visit. While perhaps not as famous as Nyhaven, there is plenty to do and see. The area close to the canal may remind you little bit of Amsterdam with its tall and colourful buildings. There is a street food market which is well worth a visit. A short walk... More

The park, waterways in this area is just so relaxing. You will see people jogging, reading on benches, just enjoying themselves here. I had a great time. Easy to access via the bus or metro as well.

Got there on a bike. It was a lovely cycle. You should definitely visit the "free state" (hippie town). It's amazing there, just to see different way of living. Respect "no photos" as locals don't like it.

Took the on-off-canal boat to Christianhaven. Nice way to get there. The most interesting places are walking throught Christiania, seeing the church and just walking around this neighborhood.

Interesting. This place is the best place to take a 13 year old to say "you get into drugs, this is what happens". I came out of the 60s......so did a lot of these people. I think I saw Timothy Leary. It is a worthwhile place to visit, but I would recommend a walking tour--how we did it.

Absolutely beautiful to look at with all the bike racks and the canal. Lots of cafes and options. Good to visit the Church of our Saviour and Christiania (hippy town).

Parts of Christianshavn are pretty to look at and explore. We saw the Church of our Savior and Opera House here. The restaurants are cheaper and houses on the water picturesque. But then we walked through the "free town" where pot is openly sold and many of the dealers are wearing masks. Lots of signs saying No Photos. Not a... More

The streets of Christianshavn provide a nice contrast to the main part of the city across the water. Here you will find local shops and an excellent collection of independent local restaurants offering well cooked food at sensible prices. It would be easy to spend several hours just wandering and stopping for coffee and cake or a meal and just... More

Christianshavn has long been considered a very trendy region of Copenhagen! The island is built on top of thousands of wooden poles (piles) which were set into the water between Slotsholmen and Amager. A city witamin a city and a home to The famous Freetown Christiania! Worth seeing!

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighborhood Profile
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
