About
Copenhagen Contemporary (CC) is Copenhagen’s international art center showing installation art created by world stars and new emerging talents. CC occupies the magnificent former B&W welding hall offering a total of 7,000 m2 of beautiful industrial halls with plenty of space to show the technical and large formats in which many contemporary artists work: total installations, performance art, and monumental video works. Art that can often be entered and sensed with the whole body.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Amager
In the eastern part of this neighbourhood, visitors will discover Amager Strandpark, a beach area which has become increasingly popular. It’s only a 30 minute bicycle ride or a 10 minute Metro trip away from the city center. Only a few hundred yards inland, some of the most creative musicians, artists, and writers in Copenhagen are occupying some of the old storage houses and production facilities. The western part is one of Copenhagen's most rapidly evolving areas, here you’ll find international architecture of the highest rank, the state of the art TV-Byen (the Danish pendant to BBC), a golf course as well as Copenhagen's best (and tiniest) ice bar.

Nice exibiton, but it was very disappointing that they charged us full price and we were not able to see all art works as they closed them before regular closing time. We went out before closing. When I asked them why they did not inform me before selling the tickets - the answer was - you still can come tomorrow, which was not our case. Ticket is 120 DKK or EUR 18, but we were able to visit only one floor. Disappointed.

Terrible place, charged full price for a ticket but half of the exhibitions were closed due to them changing to different exhibits. I understand it requires time to create art exhibits but if 3 out of the 5 are not available then cut the cost of the fare or at least warn customers before they purchase a ticket. As for the the light exhibit don’t bother, took 45 minutes to get in lasts 10 minutes and is very underwhelming, could get a better light show with a phone torch under a duvet. Defo avoid!

Perhaps I came at the wrong time, but there was something really off putting about this space. First, it was a bit far out from many of Copenhagen's other hot spots. Second, it was expensive - especially for the small number of exhibits. Two of these exhibits were James Turrell, and I did not enjoy them at all (they were both highly monitored, one was timed, and no photos/videos were allowed). I honestly got a bit of a headache in each of them, and overall I am not impressed by the concepts or themes in his pieces. I enjoy contemporary art, but not this - this felt purely indulgent. I am not surprised to learn that the Kardashians are fans of his work.

The CC is located on Refshaleö, across the water from Langeline and the Little Mermaid. It is a 30 minutes interesting walk from Nyhavn past the new Opera house, but one can also get there by car or bike. The house is the former welding house of the B&W shipyard and it is huge. I was strongly reminded of the Machine Hall at Tate Modern in London. Highly recommended to people that like playful art!

This is a large scale location in a remote spot of the city. If you take the metro, change to bus or foot or bicycle/scooter. take a detour, and you can visit Christophshavn in combination.
Contemporary is worth a visit with a nice atmosphere and impressive art. You will need 30-90 min in the venue.

Set in a fairly derelict part of Copenhagen, past the Opera House and on to Refshalevej you can get to Copenhagen Contemporary either by the Water Bus 991/992 or by ordinary bus 9a both from the Nyhavn/Christianshavn area.
The building is a huge industrial space and offers large halls for installations. At present there are four installations - see pics.
Full bathroom facilities (essential after a long journey) and a small cafe/shop.
Nearby is the street food area of Reffen, which is on the way to and from the water bus. This comprises of a number of shops and eateries all created out of old shipping containers. Just up from the water bus stop is a houseboat that also has been created out of containers.
This area is certainly up and coming and one place that anyone who wants to see a slightly different part of Copenhagen should visit.

What a boring and paper thin concept for a piece of art by Yoko Ono. Hang your wish in a tree... pffff... we did those kind of projects in high school with a hippie teacher... and the trees are in pipes of concrete which is not a pretty sight. Ono still considers herself Avant Garde haha!

Excellent and very imaginative contemporary art museum, with excellent exhibitions. Quite a distance to get to, but well worth the visit. Would definitely recommend.
