The bikes are OK and touring around on a bike in Copenhagen is great. This might be the best and cheapest way to travel around and visit all hotspots.

But be aware! The app is not that great. Registering is quite complex and takes a while. Adding your creditcard might fail a couple of times and as a result you payed 2 or 3 times.
When you select a plan (e.g 120 minutes for 80 DKK) the app automatically sets it on auto-renew. We exceeded the 120 minutes with 1 minute and were charged 80 DKK again.
(This should a deliberate user action to prevent people not being aware of this being recharged of something they don't want.)
If you want to return your bike it is not easy to find the return stations. The app only locates the stations if you search for a bike. If you're riding the bike not anymore. It than locates other bikes, but not the stations. So you have to guess that a collection of bikes probably is a station. But 1 or 2 bikes, can well be 2 bikes that were just placed in the street. And a station with no bikes, doesn't show.
We spent quite some time searching for stations to return the bikes.(And of course the rental period goes on while searching.)
Overal is your aware of this, it is certainly something to consider.

For Bycyklen: I think it's time to upgrade the app. We als rented Tier E-scooters and this rental process and the app are flawless.

Summary: do not, i repeat, do not use this service. I have been to some european cities and I am used to mediocre bike rentals. But this is the worst. The only good thing is the app. To begin with the start of a rental, most of the time, the unlocking process does not work. We tried different stations, plenty of bikes and used two accounts in two mobiles. It is more luck than determination, if you can grab a bike. Then, the bikes are in pretty bad condition (gears are without function and the worst: the brakes are not strong enough to get the bike stopped!).

I strongly support instant bike rentals. In this case, i don‘t get the whole concept. It would be better, if there were non-electrical bikes standing around the city which can be dropped anywhere in certain zones. This way, the customers would not be forced to look for special stations to get and give back the bike and the corporation wouldn‘t have to take care of charged batteries, the bikes could be cheaper dued to smaller initial costs and less maintenance.

Last time I and my family rented bikes from bycyklen, we had a great experience. We bought credits and then we all could share those equally between the five of us and it was very easy to get started and get going. Login, unlock and ride off.

This time I downloaded the app. No prob, I thought. And once in 'byen' we found the nearest rental station, and then the problems started.

The interface for choosing plan was, and still is, very confusing. The FAQ is very limited and I still don't understand what 'valid from' would mean when I have another plan that is 'current'

I also miss the GPS that made the navigation very convenient.

It took us a while to actually get all the four bikes to start with, and returning the bike was even more painful. We tried for 10-15 minutes yesterday but the docking stations refused to accept the bike, and we tried a couple of different docking points and restarted the app a number of times and also tried to report the problem... but then the app crashed every single time. And this morning my daughter received a text message that she had an active trip which lasted 12 hours.

I would not recommend this company at all. After completing a ride I locked the bike in a docking station. When I did this the app seemingly acknowledged that the bike was back and ended the ride. I did not realise until the next morning that the process had not worked and the app was still counting time. I have been calling the company ever since the customer service opened at 7:30AM, only to be answered with a machine saying they are unavailable and to send an email, which has still not been answered. My app is now saying I have been riding for 20 hours, which would charge me £150. I am not confident this will be sorted any time soon. Do not use this company if you intend on saving time and money.

Four of us tried to hire bikes. It took over 45 minutes to get four bikes released only to discover two of the the bikes were not fit for purpose, my front brake wasn't functioning and one other was simply dangerous.
The app is beyond useless, the bikes are completely worn out and I assume many are also not fit for purpose.
All four of us are very experienced cyclists (we had just done stage 2 of the Tour de France course (less the bridge) on Friday, so you can't put it down to lack of experience. In fact, an inexperienced cyclist would have soon got in real trouble.
Don't hire these bikes, go to one of the cycle shops locally as they had decent bikes available.

Dreadful experience with these e bikes. When we tried to end our trip on two occasions the app refused to recognize either where we were or that the bike was docked and locked and so we were completely stuck with time and money being docked from our account. The phone support line tells you to email. Completely hopeless and very frustrating. I’m sure there are better e bike hire companies out there.

During the first days in Copenhagen it worked out well with renting the bikes. These are sturdy and give an extra boost as e-bikes. Until one day I docked a bike (locked it tight), but the app kept the rental time running. A call to the call center ended up on an answering machine, and the ride could not be ended via the app. I then sent an email to support. The next morning I received a text message that I should return my bike because it had already been in use for more than 12 hours. Only around noon the company Bycyclen ended the ride and responded to my email. I think it is a pity that such a good idea to use more bikes in Copenhagen is implemented so badly. Often, the app also does not show the bikes that are on site (sometimes others, sometimes less). This all harms the good idea of saving CO2.

I had a similar problem to the previous post. I couldnt terminate the rental and was charged an additional 800DKK. I couldnt get through on the phone but reported the problem on the app and by email and received a full refund the next day. It was a public holiday and the offices were probably closed.

we spent most of our time in Copenhagen on the bikes!
much better than renting a normal bike as you can hop on and -off

Tips:
- 600min package (DK300) is great as good value for money, up to 5 people can use it (sharing the 600mins) and it counts BY THE MINUTE, rather than by the hour!!
- check for gearing, breaks, navigation, battery level before departure
- cycle though the Norrebo cemetery, sports grounds west of the city centre (near the Zoo) and along the river/canals/etc
- be aware of the credit card transaction fee of c DK0.85 that applies for each rental if you have not booked the 600min package or if the package is exceeded.
- you can guide/navigate to the next drop-off location

To improve:
- (for developers) provide uses with an actual app rather than using the services via a browser
- (for developers) on the bikes, enable the map as offline content so that it does not need to use data all the time to load content (see googlemaps offline content function), currently surprisingly slow.

Thank you very much for the recommendation :) We are currently developing an app which will hopefully be available before summer. I will forward your map suggestion to our CTO. Best, Iben

I had signed up to use the bikes before we went on holiday but wasn't sure what to expect when we arrived. I absolutely loved them!
They are electric so although you do have to pedal it doesn't require you to do as much as usual and the city is as flat as a pancake so I stayed in the same gear all the time.
They are quite heavy to manoeuvre but when you are in the cycle paths you are fine. We went to see the little mermaid and also had a general cycle around the city on another afternoon. You login in with your user ID and code and can have a couple of bikes on the same code. A couple were a bit temperamental to adjust the seat height but just do that prior to signing in to ensure you are at the height you need and you'll be fine. They have GPS so you can tap in the name of where you want to go and you can also find the nearest docking station to return the bike and see how many spaces there are. You can also book them in advance or just check the total bikes at each station before setting out. We stayed at Klampenburg which was unfortunately a bit far out to pick up bikes but they had them at Hellerup or you can cycle them out of the city and back. Make sure you put your hand up if you want to stop and you will be fine. My boyfriend cycles every day at home so he found the bikes a bit cumbersome but the speed is restricted so he couldn't race off and lose me and at some areas you could ride side by side. If you go through Nyhavn then I would suggest you get off and push as it's really busy. Each hour you use is charged back through the bank account you linked them with. It's 30DKK per hour which showed as £3.77 on my bank account, it emails you an invoice for each use which shows how long you used the bike for but you can also see this on the bike if you want to keep an eye on what you are spending. You can lock and leave the bikes but if you are going to be some time you would be wise to dock them and then start with a new one when you are ready.
A great way to see the city, get around quickly and have a bit of fun.
