The Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli was constructed by the French Lighthouse and Cresset Company and came in operation the first of June 1880. It is 27 m high and illuminates a 27 nautical miles distance leading ships safely into the port.
The lighthouse building is 18 meters high on ground level and 27 meters high from average sea level. Its signal is northern 40 50’ 07’’, and eastern 25’ 52’ 05’’.
The lighthouse flashes 3 white beams every 15 seconds.( 0,38 + 2,12 + 0,38 + 2,12 +0,38 + 9,62 =15δ). Its luminescence is 24 nautical miles and in good weather conditions it can be seen from a distance of 24 nautical miles (around 44 km).

It operates under supervision of the Lighthouse Service and it is one of the few supervised lighthouses left today. It is the nautical emblem of Alexandroupolis and during the celebration of Nautical Week in 1994 a marble plaque with its history was placed at the gate by the Antiquities and Cultural Heritage Club.

One should absolutely visit the old Alexandroupolis Lighthouse. The construction of a lighthouse began around 1850, by the French Company of Ottoman Lighthouses. It was inaugurated on 1 June 1880 and since then it operates without interruption. It has a height of 18 meters and if someone wishes to reach the lantern room, at the top, he needs to climb the 98 stairs with the six landings, as many as the windows that illuminate its interior.
Its overall height from the surface of the sea is 27 meters, fact that allows the light beam to be visible from a distance of 24 nautical miles (approximately 44 kilometers). It initially operated with acetylene, then with oil lamps and in 1974, the lighthouse of Alexandroupolis was connected and started to operate with electricity.

A good landmark if you get lost in the city, you are quick find a way. And it's very fine at night when the lights turn on.

The symbol of the city. The old light house can be a meeting point for tourists and locals. You cannot miss it if driving in the main street by the sea or taking your walk nearby.

The street is closed for cars in the evening and the lighthouse area becomes the perfect place to have a stroll by the sea, to have dinner and to enjoy the breeze.
