Coming from Volos head for Lake Karla by taking a small road off the ringroad to Melissatika ... when getting closer to Lake Karla. The road itself is lovely. After 30 minutes, turn right in a small town called Kerasia, follow the sign "Ano Kerasia" and just follow this road until it stops. And then: hike. The area is called Flampouriou. You will not regret spending a full day there. Bring water and food because there is NOTHING out there, it's wonderful.

This lake was drained in the 1960's and since 2011 has been refilled to a depth of about 1 meter, according to what I was told. Plans are in the works to get that up to 5 meters. I noticed many wild birds, including heron and storks in the area. The lake has many tiny islets that provide a safe spot for the birds to rest. The land around the lake is home to many other animals. We saw a fox, many lizards and a snake within a few meters of each other, but also saw grazing cows and sheep. If you want to get away from Volos and see some wildlife, it is worth the trip. Also, recommended is the nearby town of Kanalia, for a break and a conversation with the very friendly locals.

The museum building is beautiful, and the display is most interesting, diverse and thorough. We had a free tour by Angelos who told us so much about the local culture, tradition, morphology, ecologwy, flora and fauna, on the whole - such a rich experience, highly recommended!

A huge area of lakes that will keep a twitcher happy all day but... not a lot else to make the trip from the beautiful Pelion coastline worthwhile!

Don't forget the nature life, nature is the nicest, and helps so good when you are under real pressure or when you are stressed; it's nice to see Volos wildlife, to observe all the
birds who rest on this lake.
