The beach is near the famous Mamma Mia Chapel so if you are visiting the Chapel, you can have check this beach out as well.

It is only 200 metres walk from the Chapel, on a small pedestrian path leading down to the beach.

Not too impressed by the quality of the waters or sand of the specific beach, but since I went to the Chapel, I had a dive in the sea before leaving. I would recommend other beaches in Skopelos island to spend your day though. This one is more like a dive and go beach.

I was dragged there.
A chapel atop a rocky cliff on the edge of a ragged coastline overlooking the open sea. A casual scenery for Greece.
Driving down, finding place to park and getting out of there might be a frustrating experience.

After visiting the Agios Ioannis Chapel I pop down this beach. A nice but smallish sandy beach, with steep descend. The beach is just about 200 meters from the tavern, just follow the dusty trail. The beach is clean with 7€ beds/umbrella, thus not much space left. Sea was crystal clear, sufficiently deep for good swimming. For me it is just to cool down in water or for a quick splash before you head to next beach like Perivoliou beach about 15 minutes drive

We went to this beach for a picnic after visiting the church. It's a small pebbly beach but you can rent loungers and shades. There's also a place where you can get food and drink. The sea looked fantastic but we didn't swim as we were waiting for a taxi, so didn't have a lot of time. It wasn't easy to get here. We had a ferry from Skiathos and then had to get a taxi.

If you are going to do this right, you truly must get there before sunrise. The sun rises as a ball from the crook of the mountain opposite the church, and I'm told that later in the year it appears as if it's coming straight from the sea. So, I went to this holy site around 5:30AM 3X right before dawn and sat in darkness waiting for the sun to rise, and I was not disappointed. I'm not an overly religious person, but I felt a great tranquility being on this site, and for hours I was all by myself on the top of this rock with only God and my thoughts, and laying down on the bench and looking up at the sky, I did get a bit religious for a moment or two. Then more tourists startied arriving and so I left and came back 2 more mornings for the same thing. It was enlightening. The only complaint I had was that people would throw their plastic water bottles and other trash on the site and it was overflowing also from the one garbage can outside the church. I told myself that should I ever return and take holiday on Skopelos again, I would make it my personal project to keep this one part of Greece garbage free every morning as I watched the sun rise, as I felt really moved by this sacred site.

With the iconic Mama Mia chapel up the rocks and the picturesque, well hidden, little beach, Agios Ioannis is a must-see for Skopelos island. Having said that, it's not a place easily accessible for everybody. The little path going down to the beach is steep and at times slippery. The beach itself is small so don't keep your hopes high of finding a place to seat or even leave your stuff unless you visit it early in the morning or late afternoon. However, the little bar at the top of the hill offers some amenities (drinks, food, toilets, free parking space which is limited though) so you can definitely spend some time and rest there. My recommendation would be to visit the chapel, experience a quick swim in the crystal clear water (ideal for snorkelling!) of Agios Ioannis beach but move quickly to another beach to spend the rest of your day. The lack of shadow in an over-crowded 30m-long beach was an issue for me, I really wish I could stay longer! Recommended for the more adventurous type of travellers!

the beach is just next to the Mama Mia chapel
the view and the cliffs around it make this beach a jewel itself
downsides: it’s small, it gets shady early in the afternoon

My wife and I have spent our wedding anniversary in various parts of Greece for many years. We sailed past this chapel a couple of years ago on a day trip from Skiathos. Being big Abba fans, I decided that this would be a nice place to renew our wedding vows on our 30th. This is what I organised for a surprise this year.
Really glad I chose this place, it is stunning in a fantastic location.
I could not have made my wife happier.
Remarkably few tourists there, although we were there quite late in the day.

We're not much bothered about Mamma Mia (although the children are) but nonetheless this is a very beautiful destination. Approach road is a bit hairy however it's worth the gritted teeth and clenched buttocks of those travelling in a car driven by a driver who has a fear of heights. We visited early evening thus avoiding the crowds and the parking issues and had the chapel almost to ourselves. The building surpassed my expectations (I don't remember the film) and was rather characterful. It was incredibly hot at the top and I literally melted (think I lost half a stone or maybe that was after the drive down). Views were of course amazing. The descent was a bit dodgy as it is incredibly steep - think ladder. Didn't like the concrete platform at the bottom - assume created for the film crew? Café was still open and we enjoyed sipping lemon tea and playing with the kittens whilst gazing up at the chapel. Beach didn't look up to much though although there seemed to be a number of visitors.

Went with my wife to see and climb to the church on the rock , a fabulous experience and a stunning sight. The climb is fine as long as you are reasonably fit and take your time. I am 68 years old and overweight and by no means an athlete. About 200 steps get you to the top, where the little church and the views are well worth the effort. Following excellent advice we went late afternoon about 4pm, by then the tour crowds, both by boat and coach had gone, and there was at the time just us and a family from Minnesota on the upward climb. Though there had been light cloud all day on cue the sun came out to shed enhancing light on the wonderful scene.
Car parking is limited being used also for users of the adjacent beach. I can't imagine what it is like at peak times both for parking and accessing the church, but time it right and you will enjoy a unique experience, whether you are a Mamma Mia fan or not.
