The Tower of Markellos is a short walk form the port, I would say it is no longer than 10 minutes. As you walk to the Tower you will pass many restaurants and souvenir shops. The Tower is not regularly open to the public so I would recommend doing some research prior to visiting so you can have time to appreciate the building and take in the history it has been apart of.

This building may not be the biggest, may not be the most beautiful but it has an important history which makes it very sad to see that it is not being restored or looked after in anyway. This could be a great attraction if someone cared for it. Certainly worth seeing... learn about its history to fully appreciate it.

It's a nice building with plenty of history, don't get me wrong. But we weren't able to get in the building and it's not the type of building you can stand outside of and look at for hours. After 5-10 minutes we left.

In the middle of Aegina town one will be surprised to see a tower, which somewhat doesn't make sense. It it said that its origins go back to the second Venetian occupation of the island, for a few years around 1700, but location and architecture don't make sense as a defensive building. One or two shots by a cannon and the whole construction would have been made useless. We must not forget that it was then, when the Parthenon in Athens was badly damaged by a cannonball.
Also the tower of Aegina lacks loopholes and as a warning from pirates, as has been suggested, it is too removed from the coast. Most probably the whole building had been a fancy by a local politician during the years of independence and after, by a certain Spyridon Markellos. After all Aegina had been for a short moment in 1826-27 the temporary capital of newly founded Greece and then this tower also had several administrative functions.

Not very hard to find, just few steps from harbour. You should take a picture in the garden in front of the tower, and then buy some tasty pistachio nearby.

Small tower at the town of Aegina! It supports a nice story and is a good place to take a photo! Surprisingly it has a small stand woth details about it, as well as a QR code to search it online!

I left the port and sought the Markellos tower a few streets inland which was the seat of the Greek Government and Aegina its capital for a few years in the 1820s when the Greeks were rolling back the Ottomans and restoring self government. The building is interesting to look at but has no access. Worth 10 minutes stroll around and a photo.

sent here from our hosts at vagia hotel for a travel back to the middle ages in the time of pirates and thieves... this is what you feel like. many important people in the history of Greece passed through here... a must visit.

Loved the tower... a must see when you visit the island of Aegina... we were taken from our hosts from Vagia hotel on a little tour they were doing for the clients. Excellent... the tower takes you back to the age of the Greek revolution and before that!
