Eurotas outside the city is the Spartan sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. The sanctuary was probably established in the 9th century BC, and by about 700 BC a temple had been built within a paved enclosed area. Unfortunately the site is fenced off and most of...More

Unfortunately it is fenced off, so you can see site in a bit disappointed way. Apart from that you go through a bit unsecure area, so do not go alone or during night. The rest is history.

I think in 1990;went to Hellas? Went to the Temple of Artemis Orthia which is an important Ancient Site near Modern Sparta. Have of a video of my first-cousin's daughter;Eleni Kontraroudis reading the inscription, which is in Ancient Greek. A timeless place.

A must see.. although difficult to get close it is one of better examples of the ancient ruins. Part of old temple and alter. It is somewhat significant as the initiation ritual of a Spartan boy into manhood was performed here.
