We ended up at Menelaion because most of the sites in Sparta were closed. We were visiting off-season. We drove out here because we were told it was just a short hike in. We approached from the south and parked at an old church, then...More

We were keen to visit this site, having read a lot about it. We followed the road google maps recommended which led us up a very difficult path (from the south) and it is much better to approach from the north via the church. We...More

The site itself is not very large. There is the Menelaion structure and then a little distance away some old house wall remains. The site is free and there are no guards. The road up to the site is very steep and not ideal for...More

I waited for near sunset for a much more dramatic photo. It was work the effort but I have to miss the Roman Theater because you need to walk 1.5 km to this place thru olive orchard up the hill. Felt like real Spartan.
