About
In the middle of the 19th century, the Bavarian Gustav Clauss established his winery with the name «Achaia», in Patras, Greece. This winery became a small multinational wine village through the years as the employees of the winery lived and worked inside of those walls. Through the years this wine castle became a pioneer of legendary wines. Nowadays Achaia Clauss produces wines in its current, modern facilities. The winery presents a new collection of handcrafted wines with the name «Castro Clauss». This collection does not include any use of electricity. When you visit our winery except from the historical places ( The Imperial Cellar , The Barelatiko exhibition , The Underground Cellar), our guided tours include a wine tasting of our products. The Achaia Clauss Winery has been making wines for 161 Years.

Our visit to the winery was terrific. We were given a tour by our lovely host, Liana, who took time to explain the history of Achaia Clauss, before taking us through a delicious wine tasting.

We even left with 4 bottles of wine, all of which were well priced and serve as great souvenirs of our visit. I couldn’t recommend this place enough.

I dare to say that no trip to Patra in Greece is complete without a visit to Achaia Clauss Vineyard and Castle. The Vineyard surroundings and the Castle are majestic overlooking Patra and the sea. I suggest you make an appointment for both a tour of the cellars, and on the way down to the imperial cellar you will get a glimpse on the history of their cooperage. The imperial cellar has carved barrels back from the start with over a century old mavrodaphne wine. If you are lucky the wine tasting will take place in the Belle view cellar where you can see all their bottled wines, if not you will have a fantastic view of it from the floor of the bar and you can enjoy the view from the balcony. Fantastic wine and great staff, so don't miss it!

We made a late afternoon visit to Achaia Clauss winery. We knew very little about this winery and did not know what to expect. We were welcomed right away by Gemma, a darling young lady who took us on a tour where she explained the history of the winery, taught us about the barrel making process and showed us a room where they keep special estate wines. After that, we had a lovely tasting of whites, rosé, reds and dessert wines. This winery is a very short drive out of Patras, but the views are beautiful. We would highly recommend visiting Achaaia Clauss winery and if you are lucky, you will get Gemma as your guide!

We visited the winery without reservation a Monday morning. We were welcomed by a very polite young man who suggested to take the 18 Euro tour which is accompanied by a wine tasting of three local wines. After a while a young lady showed us the vineyard and the room where the barrels were manufactured. In the end of the tour we visited the place were the wine is stocked. She was very helpful and willing to answer to all our questions. Bofore we leave we bought two bottle of wines and the book with the history of the winery. We left the winery full of new information. Definetely a must see in the area of Patras.

Into a nice scenery,
Guided tour of the old winery, with barrels containing sweet mavrodaphne wine dating from 1890.
Cosy bar, free mavrodaphne tasting, selling their own wines.

Visit can be combined with the nearby Glafkos hydroelectric plant. Tavernas with grilled meat can be found on the entrance.

We toured the winery on the 18th on the 3:30 tour. They have timed tours and there was on at 2:30 and others earlier but I don’t remember when.

Our tour guide was lovely. She did a very nice job of giving a tour and assuring that the English speaking members of the tour understood her and what she was saying. Many on the tour were Greek, and she alternated saying everything in both languages.

We bought bottles of wine that was fabulous for 6.5 euros.

The tour was very interesting and informative.

The grounds and winery were beautiful.

Unfortunately the winery lives at the shadow of what used to be, the location is GREAT (according to my opinion ) the best location in Achaia, but unfortunately the winery looks like is in disintegration, i've bought a couple of "Malagouzia" white wines that you wouldn't use them not even for vinegar..... I hope they'll wake up before it'll be too late. The place got a lot of history on its back !!!!!
