It was on this tour that I learned how the Greeks use their mythology to explain some of their history. As you go through this archaeological site and marvel at how an ancient civilization could create a city without modern technology you are reminded of how appealing Greek mythology really is. While modern histories cannot explain all of histories mysteries... More

We had an almost full day visiting Mycenae and the acropolis, where King Agamemnon ruled this ancient civilization. There are several areas and sites to explore while you are here. Among the more, well known include; the Treasury of Atreus, the grave circles and royal tombs, the Lion Gate, (near the entry) and the palace remains. The archaeological site, dates... More

As I approached Mycene's famous Lion Gate I was amazed at the size of the walls and the stones that comprize them. How did relatively small Bronze Age people build this fortress? Not to mention the tombs. The palace complex and grave sites are fascinating. The Museum at the site has sophisticated gold work and pottery. I came away with... More

Travelling towards Nafplion, among orange groves, I always try to direct my gaze on the left to spot the ancient hill where Mycenae nests. It is very hard. I have to actually stop to be able to pinpoint it among the rest of the hills and mountains. Then, as I get closer and arrive at the site, the true magnificence... More

Can't imagine how hot it would be here in summer! Lots of buses in the small parking lot so take care parking! Make sure you walk down the stairs to the cistern! The museum has a well documented collection of things found during the excavation. Wear good shoes and sunscreen. Views from top really great!

We visited Ancient Mycenae with our kids, ages 14 and 10, on a beautiful sunny April day. We rented a car in Athens and drove ourselves, allowing us to avoid the large tour groups that often descend on these kind of sites. The entire site is fascinating, starting with the massive Lion Gate. Signs are posted throughout the site giving... More

To visit Mycenae is to take a very long step back in time, actually several thousand years. Not very much is left, but the Lion Gate and the King Tombs are very well preserved. The ruins are located on a hill where you'll get a magnificent view of the area around. When visiting ancient Sites like Mycenae and Epidaurus, please... More

This is where the famed Lion Gate stands. It is a must visit to understand this crucial era in Greek history. The views are spectacular too.

It is quite a challenge to visit Ancient Mycenae during a sunny day, but if you like history worth the effort. With comfortable clothes and footwear, a bottle of water and sunglasses, you can manage! As you reach the site, you can understand why the place was chosen as a residence for the royal house of Atreidae and their people:... More

Ancient Mycenae is one of the best archaeological sites in Greece. Don't miss the CYCLOPEAN WALLS (the first thing you see from the road), the wonderful LION GATE (a masterpiece of sculpture), the GRAVE CIRCLE A (with remains of tombs where ancient artifacts where found), the PALACE complex, the underground CISTERN (be careful!) and another minor gate on the other...
