The road from Kalamata to Sparta through Taygetos mountain is an exceptionally wild yet beautiful drive in GREECE.Only 10 kilometers after you leave Kalamata you arrive to a deep gorge that gives you the feeling of flying with a helicopter, while you hear the noice of the river Nedontas.Stop on the bridge over the river and listen to the music of the forest. After 13 kilometers stop at Artemisia village for local food, there are 2 restaurants,Theotokos and Koupitsas ,ask for "pasto"=pieces of pork in wine, olive oil and spices, along with fried eggs and local bread.
Continue another 10 kilometers and you are at the hight of 1300 meters staring at the Top of Taygetos mountain at 2408 meters surrounded by unspoiled forests. If you drive a 4X4 Car follow the road at tthe right of the restaurant towards Rizanna a tiny village of 6 sheppards houses ! Excellent ! Otherwise you may buy local spices and preferably oreganon and continue driving down towards Sparta through the most wild passes you may ever seen .Stop anywhere you like before you arrive to Keadas the famous historical place of ancient Sparta. Then visit Mistras the complete medieval town where 4 emperors of Byzantium were borne. Astonished ! Sparta valley and the ancient town is only 5 kilometers to be exploided ! Trip distance 58 klm,90 minutes

I took this hike with a local guide from the south (Agios Dimitrios-Spanakaki ridge- summit Mount Taygetos). The first part of the tour leads through the beautiful Vasiliki forest with black spruces. After an alpine meadow the more difficult part starts, the views from ridge are very beautiful but the track can be at parts tricky with unstable shingles.
The track is reasonably well indicated but I would not undertake this hike without an experienced guide. A good physical condition is also necessary for this trip.
The views from the road to the summit and from the summit itself are absolutely stunning with views over the southern Peloponnesos until Kythera.

Great hike from Magganari spring, staying in the the shelter for one night and then walking to the top at 3.30am to catch the pyramid shadow.
Spring to shelter 1.5 to 3 hours depending how fit you are, shelter to the top about 2 to 3 hours and around the same coming back down maybe slightly faster. Hiking boots are a must for the final accent from the shelter.
The route is very clearly marked so you can't get lost. A decent level of fitness is required. A torch is needed if your going to hike up before sunrise. We made the novice mistake of not having one and had to use phones which isn't really ideal, but it still worked fine. The pictures I uploaded are not in the right order. Also the shelter was 12 euros a bed and anything the hosts give you is not free, you will have to pay. They are very friendly and helpful though and have a good knowledge of the mountain so you can ask them anything you are unsure off.

We took the old mountain road between Kalamtaa and Sparti around 15 October 2018, there were two cars we saw driving west and just us driving east. Compared to how the traffic used to be, it's a pleasure. Beautiful, beautiful scenery. On the western side of the Taygetos, there are some lovely mountain villages and a road that leads to Kalamata with even LESS traffic. I suspect in the summer it would be a different story but in October, you'll have the road to yourself. Be sure to pack a lunch, all restaurants we saw were closed. For those of you wanting thrills, there are several places for cliff scaling.

Going up with family who had previously completed the climb, it took three hours up and just over two back down. A very enjoyable yet difficult day, the paths are easily distinguishable but tricky at times. The last 200 meters was the hardest part, where the lack of flora meant the path became just shingle.
The only point stopping it from being 5 star was the summit, although it had spectacular views, the local goat herds had made it their home for the winter and the resulting smell was almost unmanageable.
For anyone attempting this, good sturdy shoes and walking poles are a must!

Beautiful drive through and over the mountains. Lovely vistas around every turn. Be sure to gas up and bring water, not much in between. Slow go because of the many twists and turns but totally worth the effort.

It’s only 55km between Kalamata and Sparta, but through this mountain road it takes you about 90-100 minutes to cover it. Views are great if the cliffs and woods, all green and also with nice winds to calm the heat.

We decided to take the old mountain road from Sparta to Kalamata, and, although it took more time, we thoroughly enjoyed the drive - lovely scenery and open vistas on the western side, no cars, nature at it's best.
At the beginning of the uphill stretch there is a small church with a tiny taverna, by the road, under trees and with lots of running water, perfect for coffee of even a meal.
The condition of the tarmac road is good. There are quite a few curves, but, its not frightening for those who suffer from fear of heights, as I do.
Taygetos is a great place for hikers and rock climbers.
The road didn't take us through any villages, but, on the western ridge, we could see villages on the hillside.
Apart from the little taverna mentioned above, there is no other place for food or petrol until one is approaching Kalamata.
Well worth taking this road versus highway, at least once.

The park's not only ideal for nature-lovers (rare plants, eagles....) and people who enjoy walking (masses of trails - you can walk all the way down into the Mani if you want), but also for gourmets (there are plenty of little tavernas - I had the best stifado I've ever had in my life in one of them - it was 'lagostifado') and people who're just looking for cool air and peace after the heat and crush of the coast in summer. Taygetos honey is out of this world. They sell it at roadside stalls.

We decided to go trekking in Taygetos and were mezmerised by the beauty of the mountain. Unfortunately, we did not reach the peak, but went as high as the shelter. You will need trekking shoes but it is not something very difficult if you follow the path of the mountain..It is not very touristy and therefore it is ideal for an outdoor activity.

Thank you for your great information. So to take this road instead of the main on to Sparti and Monemvasia from Kalamata; do you need a 4xwheel drive?
Written February 9, 2017
Hi
Is there a way to go up the summit and back in one day (assuming we don't have a 4x4 car)? Where is the hike's starting point?
Thanks
Written August 28, 2015
There is a route on Viewranger - I was going to post the link but TA won't let me - just search on the map south of Sparti, there's only one route to find.
