The founds of the catacombs are really impressive. It is quite difficult to find the way to go down, under the church's foor. The only negative think is that there is not signs with informations and a normal human being like me should use more...More

I didn't know about them-till I asked some people outside of the church of st.Demetrius.It is something that you should not miss.Very mystical atmosphere-plus this is the coolest place that someone can be during summer time in Thessaloniki

Part of Greek Orthodox culture and patrimony- worth a visit - lots if amazing artefacts to see and a serene place to reflect and pray. Souvenir shops in front of the church are a bit out of place And kill the ambiance but it’s also...More

amazing, totally intact crypt, free visits but limited hours. More interesting than the church itself!

open everyday. This is something to discover. The legends has it that Thessaloniki was full of hidden catacombs 1500 years ago and only the emperor was allowed to walk them

Under the impressive church are very old ruins, dating from the roman era and also the Cript of St.Demetrius from that era as he lived in the 4th century A.D.and was a soldier in the roman army. Interesting place to visit.

The crypt in Agios Demetrios looked really interesting but unfortunately all the information on the plaques/boards in the crypt are in Greek only!! This is a shame as meant I couldn’t read anything about the crypts history. Was still nice to have a look around...More

But it is hopelessly closed to the casual visitor. No info is given in the Agios Dimitrios church. Just the entrance door, that I found as described on various websites, but closed with no sign. Opening hours? Need a guide? Or just some luck?

The church is always open to the public and Masses are only held on Saint Demetrios church, not on the catacombs. On Saturdays, Masses are held in the morning (around 07:00 - 09:30)
