Agios Demetrios is the Saint Protector of the city of Thessaloniki. A beautiful church with a unique crypt. History tells that from the Saint's tomb you can still scent the holy unction of myrrh.

The stairs going to the underground are next to the altar, on both sides, and very easy to miss if you don't have a guide.

We came across this by accident as we were wandering one afternoon. It is extremely beautiful and well worth a visit, not only for the crypt but the Church and gardens are stunning.

The church is always open to the public and Masses are only held on Saint Demetrios church, not on the catacombs. On Saturdays, Masses are held in the morning (around 07:00 - 09:30)
