We were really shocked that twice we were asked to leave, despite standing respectfully at the back of the church and being very conservatively dressed. A couple of members of the congregation made a point of asking us to come back, but of course we...More

The church is between Agias Sofias and Acheiropiitou streets, north of Egnatias street, opposite Vikas Parking area. An icon, in the church, of the Virgin Mary, is said to be 'acheiropiitos', or 'not made by human hands', hence the name of this late 5th century...More

Enjoy the marvellous church with its genuine Byzantine architecture and by far the best mosaics in Thessaloniki. The name "Achiropiitos", meaning non hand made, was given for a reason... for sure!

A large basilica, one of the grand early churches of Thessalonike. Only parts of the original decoration survive, but the volumes and play of light are impressive.

A rare find of a Byzantine church in/near centre of town. It has lovely mosaics, some of which still retained its colours.
