Such a gorgeous little church in the middle of Ana Poli's small winding streets. The mosaic is really beautiful but the story behind it makes it even more fascinating. The gentleman in the church is very welcoming and will explain everything to you. Well worth your time.

We were lucky enough to have about 30 mins explanation of the fresco, what it contained & how it has survived with the colours so vivid. Only a small monastery, but this fresco is the highlight of the visit.

Lovely little church from 4th century with very old and outstanding mosaic. Do not miss it. It is worth looking for it among the narrow streets of Ano Poli on the way to the Eptapirgiou castle. View from the churchyard is amazing too.

don't miss this jewel of the oldest church in Thessaloniki, hidden away in the nestled streets and staircases of the old upper town. Once a monastery, only the church itself is left, with its fresco painting and it's splendid central mosaic. A must for every visitor interested in arts and culture.

This monastery houses the remains of St Lukes body. This is important to some people. The church isn't open all day, we visited about 5pm.

Not for the first time in Greece, indeed it is happening everyday now, this place was closed without explanation. Having walked an hour to find it, you then get a padlock, opening hours which suggest it should be open, and nothing else. This has happened almost everywhere we have been.

It is a beautiful small church, very old, probably 4th century, with a beautiful view. Situated in the old city, it is a "must" if you go for a walk. Usually one starts from the castle walls and walks down towards the center of the city. Half way is the church..

A small ancient christian place of worship, at a high point of Thessaloniki, offering great views towards the city and the sea. The church is small but it offers a great mosaic that is one of the nicest in Thessaloniki.

The rare mosaic of Jesus (not bearded and rather androgynous) is the jewel in this lovely little crown. Very typical of very early depictions of Jesus (rather than intended as a portrayal of a young Jesus). Most people would be more familiar with the bearded portrayal that became dominant and stayed so in Christianity. Some people say that this is... More
