The Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments in this museum offer a true understanding of the ancient heritage of this magnificent city and it's significant role during the Byzantine Empire. From ancient mosaics and tombstones (Στυλίς), to precious icons and every day artifacts, this museum does not dissapoint. If you have interests in Byzantine Culture we highly recommend this museum. It is well displayed and informative. It also has a variety of Byzantine artifacts. This city was very important during the Byzantine era and it is reflected in the museum.

The Byzantine Museum in Thessaloniki is quite unique since the exhibits present orthodox christian relics that cannot be found at any other museum. The icon collection is superb, while the information material give you a first glimpse of the often unknown to the wide public history of the Byzantine empire.

Everything about this museum was great: well-done exhibits, informative descriptions in Greek and English and a comprehensive look at this important historical era. Photos without flash were allowed, so we took a ton of shots in this large museum, which is organized by date ranges, specific topics (an entire section on artistic interpretations of Christ) and themes (weapons, armour, etc.).... The icon section is outstanding as is the section with portions of former churches. One nice think is that you can freely take photos (w/o flash) inside.

We appreciated the thoughtful presentation of carefully curated artifacts, which were laid out over seven rooms arranged chronologically. However, the experience of being closely followed by the guards as we moved through the galleries was seriously off putting. It got to the point that I wanted to yell "BACK OFF, PLEASE."
