About
The Thessaloniki Cinema Museum is housed in a landmark warehouse on the first wharf of the port of Thessaloniki, at the beginning of the old avenue along the waterfront, not far away from Aristotelous Square, in the center of the city. In Thessaloniki Cinema Museum we wish to share with you the magic of Greek cinema in a “dark room” unwinding like a huge film reel. We want you to follow the red path, that step – by – step recollects the scenes of a cinematographic fairytale, almost one hundred years of age.

It is a small museum (expect to spend there no more than half an hour), but knowing the price, which is only 2 euros, it is well worth it. I liked it being a foreigner, although it is even more interesting for the locals, I guess, because they know the movies, actors, etc. It is a nice short overview of Greek cinema, including some episodes from their best movies that you can watch in the museum. If you happen to be in the port area, it is a good place to visit.

Really enjoyed my time in there to travel through a history of Greek Film .Each exhibit is accompanied by a short leaflet guide in several languages including English . The place is a blend of prop and costume exhibits and films detailing things about each stage of the exhibition . It was the best 4 euros I spent .

I grew up watching these films as I was growing up in Australia and I notice that Greek TV still shows a classic Greek film of the 50’s/60’s on the 10pm time slot each night. Enjoyed all the videos in this museum. There is also a small cinema research library in the building as well.

This is a unique museum write on the seashore of the Thessaloniki city center where you can spend a very good one hour and move through the different stages of the Greek cinema. There are many item from the past which showcase the progress in the world of cinema and the related technology. All the pieces shown on the small screen throughout the place are from Greek cinema but they all had subtitles in English, so you can eqally enjoy them as Greeks do.

Rather than visiting this museum, just walk a few more meters and go have a look at the museum of photography.
Honestly not too much to see and a very cold welcome.

The history of Greek cinema in some ways mirrors the US cinema but with a few twist.

The museum is located on the pier in a renovated building. The entrance fee is minimal especially compared to the experience you'll have during your visit.

Just follow the red road around to each chronology gives you clips of what occurred , filmmaker thoughts and the public reactions. You begin similarly with silent films some mimicking US films but with Greek stars - turned out not to be a hit with the public.

Ending with the VCR , DVD, of course TV and the decline of movie attendance. Yet the cinema had survived through what might be described as arts films and the filmmakers development of their own cinematic styles.

Worth a visit. Each room provides written English and Greek materials on the rooms subject.
