The excursion that we booked, and that was outlined in the publicity, and that we were looking forward to, was not what we received. To make sure that we were on target, we read the publicity leaflet several times after our excursion. I don't like to write negative reviews, especially on a potentially wonderful excursion, but we were quite disappointed. To begin with, there were four of us on the excursion, crowded into a car meant for three passengers. With three full sized adults in the back seat, and considerable time in the car (I was in the middle), it was very uncomfortable. Secondly, although our guide was a lovely person, and knowledgeable in his own field, he was not prepared for this particular excursion. When we arrived in Veria, there was little information provided on the Jewish community that had been there before WW 2 and Hitler decimated it, and the synagogue was closed. Considering that there was a sign in Greek and English at the entrance to the synagogue giving the hours, I would have expected a tour guide to this specific site to have known if it would be open. Only because we expressed our considerable disappointment, was the effort made to locate the woman who cares for the site, who eventually came to open it. She was wonderful, and gave a beautiful explanation of the site and the community, but we heard nothing from our guide about the Jewish quarter, as was promised in the publicity. This is a unique area, and we truly wanted to hear much more of the history, which is still relatively recent. During the long car ride to the vineyard, we were given no explanation as to what the area was that we were driving through. In addition, we were given to understand that there seemed to be a problem with the availability of the person who usually gives the tour. When we finally arrived, someone (who did not speak English) gave us a rather uninformative tour (as translated by our guide) - and as a couple who has been on wine tasting tours elsewhere, this one was far less than promised and far less than it could have been. We are very disappointed that the day was far less than promised, and do not feel that we got good value for the money we spent.
