This was on our west coast itinerary, so last port of call that day. Guide book said we could hike up from Paleokastritsa (village below) but that was an hour each way, so we plumped for the drive up to Krini and went up from there. Wise decision - hot enough day as it was and the climb would have been steep! When we visited, 3 euros each entry, so paid and went in. Few info plaques located at the entrance and inside to tell you about the history of the place and the strategic importance in times gone by. Having ascended the steps and clambered over the rocks to get to the views at the outside at the top, it's easy to see why this was such a good spot for a fortress and why it was built there. Great views up and down the coast, so no chance of being sneaked up on! Closes at 6PM, so get there an hour before to give time to see it. Tiny hidden away church near the top (cut into the rock?) as well as a more modern brick built one on top.

Tuesday 24th August and we drove to Krini to visit the ancient Castle of Angelokastro. The castle stands on the  highest peak of the island's shoreline, 310 metres  (1,020 feet).

We climbed up the steps of various lengths, depths and sizes to the gate of the Castle. There were 170 steps (counted on the way down required less energy).

From the gate we clambered our way up a sort of pathway, over boulders and rocks, at times the dexterity of a mountain goat was required.

Having made to the top we were reward with great views around. We were also able to visit the restored Church of the Acropolis — Archangel Michael's Church.

Inside the Castle was an information board giving some historical information.

There was a bit of confusion about the opening hours, according to Google Maps it was closed on Tuesday. However, the official website says it was shut on Mondays.

When we visited the ticket office was closed, so we thought let's give it a go, thankfully the gates, at the top, in to the Castle were open.

The opening hours are from 10.00am until 17.30, with a ticket and then closes at 18.00, definitely requires more than 30 minutes to get up and down.

The entrance fee is €3 so not going to break the Bank if the ticket office is open.

The drive up through Lakones is a challenge, following a coach is a bonus as it helps to clear your way! The village traffic lights take 7.5 mins, so be patient :)
There is a small car park below the castle, next to the taverna, but we parked in a roadside space & walked down.
Small fee for entrance €3 (?), the climb up to the ruins is easy and has views on all sides, the colours of the water below are spectacular. Even with a full car park the ruins themselves didn't feel crowded so it was easy to explore and enjoy.
After your visit, stop at the taverna for an ice cream or snack - friendly staff and super-clean toilets.

Lovely drive, brisk walk, amazing views and definitely well worth a visit. The walk up is nice and easy with an occasional slippery worn out step. The views up the ruins shows what Corfu is all about though.
Parking is tiny, but the road only leads to here. so, you can always park on the side of the road.
The only signal on the road has 7.5 mins of switching time. But definitely, wait. the roads through the village is narrow.

One of the best points to visit in Corfu. The castle remembers old times and it is really well preserved ruins.
Entrance fee is really symbolic. 3 euro if I remember correct. Means less then coffee.
The stony path towards castle shows how difficult it was to get here for enemies.
Breathtaking views are the best award for hard climbing :-)
Absolutely recommended.

Ancient castle on a hill, giving you a great view of the surrounding area. The drive is ok, although roads are narrow, but with a small rented car there is always enough space. Luckily there was enough parking space when visiting, perhaps peak season this might be a problem.

13th century Byzantine castle on Corfu - this one has a spectacular location. High on the rock, 300 metres over the sea. That means you need some climbing from the parking (tiring) but you will be rewarded with great views to the sea and the island. The remains of the castle include small church, underground chapel and walls. Entry is EUR 3 per person. Remember that it's closed on Tuesdays.

Excellent view at the top of the castle, but not necessarily for those afraid of heights! A small amount of parking at the base, be careful in parking as coaches turn in the area. 3 euros each to enter and fairly steep climb... I had to stop once or twice (59 year old!). Be careful on the rocks at the top as I didnt think they were particularly safe, especially if you have kids. No facilities at the top but plenty when you come back down.

One of the highlights of Corfu. A little bit of history with amazing views from the top. It is possible to drive up to the entrance of the castle. The parking area isn't too big, but with a bit of luck parking should be no problem. The hike up to the castle is maybe 10-15 mins. It's steep, but totally worth it. Wear good shoes - sandals aren't the best choice as there are a lot of rocks. The restaurant next to the castle is a good place for a drink after the visit. Amazing place, I'd definitely go back.

Great family activity. We brought our 6 year old and 4 year old. Sturdy tennis shoes are best as there is a lot of uneven ground and slippery rocks. There is plenty to see at the top and the view is incredible.
