Hiked from Nisaki up to old Sinies- abandoned village in the mountains. Hike up took around an hour and forty five minutes, and down a bit less. You could drive up most of the way, but narrow roads and un-paved in parts. Village itself was peaceful and beautiful - and quite atmospheric. Lovely old abandoned houses a church, and other buildings. Thoroughly enjoyed!

Tucked away in a valley above Nisaki and overlooked by the communications masts, this ancient village was abandoned in the 1960s and has now fallen into ruins. The site of the village was said to be originally chosen because the valley was hidden from the view of invading pirates! The houses have once been very grand, and the churches are intact and show evidence of still being used.
To reach the village we followed the road signs drove as far up the mountain as we dared. Then we walked! It was a steep rough road, but we managed it easily in simple trainers and flip flops! There are no facilities en route, so a bottle of water is a good idea!!
The views from the village out to sea are amazing and the area is very peaceful, the only noises are wildlife. This village is off the main tourist route and is worth the effort to find. The houses and pathways are fascinating to investigate and it shows another aspect of Corfu history. One church is newly restored and locked, but the other, smaller church was open and had beautiful icons painted onto the walls and ceilings. We felt like real explorers!!!

A very interesting village, probably the oldest maintained settlement of the island. One can visit it either by off-road vehicle from Spartylas or by the Corfu Trail section running this side of Corfu. Along Corfu Trail, I used the Android application "Corfu Trail topoguide", which offered with accurate navigation and valuable information for the village and the surroundings.

Which one is the better road to reach, the one from north from above from Pantokrator downhill or the one from south uphill?
Written January 29, 2020
Better take one of the roads from Sinies or Nissaki and prepare a walk with good shoes. The pathway from Pantokrator is only suitable for Quad or higher 4x4 AND only experienced drivers.
