Myrtos Beach
Myrtos Beach

About
Surrounded by tall marble cliffs and looking out onto the azure waters of the Myrtos Gulf, this stunning beach makes for a dramatically breathtaking sight. A steep and winding stretch of road will take you there—stop on your way to admire the view and catch the pink and orange hues at sunset on your way back.
Get in early to secure both a place to park and a prime spot on the sand; the water tends to be at its calmest in the morning too. There are changing rooms and toilet facilities, a beach bar, and a few sunbeds and umbrellas you can rent.

- PenelopeLoughborough, United Kingdom8 contributionsMost beautiful beach on the planetWe landed here after hearing how wonderful the beach was. Although we are out of season and nothing was open here, the beach was deserted so we had it to ourselves. It didn’t disappoint- we went in a fairly windy day and the waves were amazing. And the blue of the sea - the pictures don’t do it justice. I can imagine in summer it would be packed but late April and September, the locals say is best time to come. Things are more open and weather is not windy.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 29, 2023
- jaybeeFLPalm Harbor, Florida3,280 contributions"Top 10 In The World"??????We stopped on the road well above the beach for a photo op. Yes, the location surrounded on three sides by steep sandstone cliffs is quite spectacular and the azure waters of the Ionian Sea amazingly beautiful but I don't believe it ranks in the world's Top 10 beaches as our guide intimated!!!! Great photos though!!Visited April 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 4, 2023
- Dave KSt. Albans, United Kingdom99 contributionsSpectacular views but take appropriate footwear…We went in may when the beach wasn’t busy and nor was the road in…I imagine it could be different in the peak season. Steep descent down…but the road better than many others we have done this week. Lots of (free) parking. Stunning views. Crystal clear water and a great cave off at the far end (south). Toilets weren’t open though yet (just a dodgy portaloo) and although it looks like there will be a bar, not open yet. Can imagine it would be an amazing spot to watch sun go down. Main recommendation is to take good beach footwear…the stories about the pebbles are true. Have to confess I was crawling out of the sea on all fours.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 26, 2023
- IonianPrivateCruisesPoros, Greece24 contributionsGreat looking beach. Little hard to park in high season. Go with sea shoes or with a boat.Great extra large with white pebbles beach. Really beautiful colour of the water. Scenery is amazing. Not great to walk on the pebbles though. Also a bit hard to park in high season.Visited September 2022Traveled with familyWritten June 8, 2023
- Michelle, ThirskThirsk, United Kingdom92 contributionsA great photo point from the top but that’s itA little disappointed. Stunning views of the beach from the top but when you go down you realise it isn’t a sandy beach but white pebbles which give it the white sand effect. Very uncomfy to lie on as there are no sun beds here. The many coaches bringing tourists descend on the beach so like ants and the entrance into the water is impossible without water shoes and then the water is cloudy with poor visibility for snorkelling. It makes a great photo but that’s itVisited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 25, 2023
- Nicola MWiltshire, United Kingdom3 contributionsShort visit but definarely worth it as a point of interest if you are driving.Absolutely stunning beach, pure white pebbles creating a spectacular array of colours of the sea. Well worth the visit just to see it. When we went swimming was not possible due to the waves but it was still very busy. Be prepared for limited parking even though the parking area along the beach is big, and very narrow and windy road down.Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 10, 2023
- Lesley Ann JGlasgow, United Kingdom19 contributionsFabulous BeachStunning beach. We went early, arrived at about 10am and parking was fine. Got ourselves a couple of beds and a shade and stayed there all day. The sea is warm (July). There is a beach bar at the back of the beach and also toilets and showers.Visited July 2023Written July 19, 2023
- Sandra PScarborough, United Kingdom208 contributionsLovely day at this beautifully located beach.Anyone visiting Myrtos Beach in July and expecting it not to be busy has some seriously unrealistic expectations I would suggest. Yes, the beach was busy but to be honest I've seen more packed beaches in the UK at the first sign of sun. I can also see that if you drive down it is perhaps quite stressful given the hairpin bends and amount of cars but this is not the beach's fault. We took a taxi from Fiskardo, which cost 45 Euros each way and took approx 40 minutes. The beach is in a beautiful location. It is a shingle beach, so beach shoes were useful. The sea was blue, clean and clear. There were plenty of sunbeds, which were very reasonable at 10 Euros for 2 plus a parasol. The beach cafe was clean, well stocked with drinks and snacks and we didn't experience (or see) any long queues. Toilets are of the portaloo type but again were clean and stocked with toilet paper. Perhaps previous reviewers had a particularly bad experience but it was certainly not ours, we had a lovely day. The earlier you arrive, the quieter it is.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 20, 2023
- cavvyseeEngland, United Kingdom17 contributionsStunning views, great beach!Great beach with stunning views! Sea was nice and warm too. We went at 5pm and although it was still very hot, it wasn’t too busy. The roads are tight to get up and down there so if you are not a confident driver be warned! Some great views on the drive otherwise. There are changing and WC facilities down there which are free to use which is handy too. Definitely worth a visit if you are in kefalonia.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 22, 2023
- Trani FIsola d'Ischia, Italy86 contributionsNice but not the firstAccording to most it is the most beautiful beach in Kefalonia and one of the best in Greece. In fact the water has beautiful colors typical of the Mediterranean sea but in my opinion it comes after Petani beach. There is a choice between a free or equipped beach, the prices are modest, in line with those of Kefalonia, between 10 and 15 euros for an umbrella and 2 sunbeds. Like many beaches on the island it’s made of pebbles.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 25, 2023

We hired a car and drove there from Skala after visiting mellisani cave.
Stunning views as you drive down to it. Looks deceptively like white sand but it’s actually pebbles.
Cars park all along the road that winds down to the beach. I would recommend that you drive right to the bottom then start from there to find a space as there are people coming and going all the time.
I would highly recommend buying a parasol from the shop in the little town at the top before you drive down (around €13) as there is no shade unless you hire a sunbed.
We just wanted to snorkel and had beach shoes with us so when we reached the rocks it was easy to clamber around. Spent a wonderful couple of hours snorkelling around the rocks in the beautifully scenic bay.

Today is the last day of our holiday and we wanted to see the sunset at Myrtos Beach. The waves were spectacular as was the sunset.
However there was one man swimming in the water alone. At first it appeared that he was having fun but as the light faded it was clear that he was unable to return to the beach. A crowd developed and various people tried to assist including locals with life buoys, flash lights, long lines etc.
We are not aware of the fair of this young man but it was a horrific scene.
We did not know what to do so felt the best we can do is to warn others here. Please take extreme care if considering to swim here, especially is no life guard is on duty.

Named in top 10 world beaches by many magazines and agencies, Myrtos certainly deserves it.
Dramatic setting between two huge cliffs with gel like aqua marine water is best seen from the road view point up. Zig zag paved road (10 y ago it was gravel road) takes you down there, so no problem to access it. Once down, parking is the biggest problem - we circled almost half an hour to get a spot (parking is free).
Beach is long and wide, so despite huge number of people in July peak season it didn't seem crowded. Water is movie like, simply gorgeous.
However, there's only one establishment selling food and drinks and renting sunbeds. Lines are huge and food junk with inflated prices (ordinary bakery stuff, didn't see nothing below 5 euros a piece). We stayed some 2,5-3 hours and moved to Antisamos beach which has much more facilities.

The white stones create an azure sea which in August was perfectly cool and refreshing. Get some sane shoes because the stones can hurt one's feet a bit and an umbrella is a must, and at times rentable with longer. The scenery and the drive memorable. Make sure to capture a groupie from the view up, waaay up above!

The beach is stunningly beautiful, even more so when the waves are huge. If you use your common sense and watch them from the shore you'll be witness to a great display of the beauty and force of nature. The whole experience is beautiful: the many shades of blue in the water, the thunder of the crashing waves, the small droplets of water the wind brings on your face and the smell of the salty sea.
Adding to what two previous reviewers said about the guy that "tried to win the
Darwin Award", he was eventually rescued by a helicopter after staying 6 hours on a small anchored raft with a lifeguard, riding 3-4 meter waves. May sound fun but I'm sure it's not.
Take caution when swimming here, even when the waves seem small-medium, as the water is deep and there is a current pulling you back into the water when trying to get out, so you'll have to fight it a little. As a bonus, exiting the water you'll step on rocks that will prevent you from exiting elegantly. More common would be exiting doing the Australopithecus walk or sometimes even on all fours.
If you accept those things and are aware of and respect the power of the sea here, you'll have a great experience.

We hired a car to get to the beach and arrived just after 9am. We parked easily on the front and hired a couple of beds and an umbrella which were very well priced. The beach quickly became busy with families who brought their own seats and umbrellas and the for hire beds were sold out by 10.30.
There is a good cafe serving a selection of food i.e. sandwiches, pastries, ice cream, hot and cold drinks and there are toilets and showers. At lunch time the queue for the food was very long but shaded and the prices were slightly above average.
The access to the water is very stoney: bring beach shoes. The waves are big and the water gets deep quickly. Get in and out of the water can be challenging but fun. Although there were small children here it is not a great beach for small children or non swimmers.
We meant to stay for a couple of hours but ended up staying for most of the day because we liked it so much.

A beach so spectacularly blue you have to pinch yourself hour after hour to check you are not dreaming. The water is immensely clear and the blueness goes on forever. It is a cove surrounded by luscious green mountains - with mountain goats for added Greek authenticity and the white sand is like silk upon the soles of
Your feet. The waves are strong and the current powerful which makes it difficult to get out for a swim but it is immensely fun playing around in the waves on the vast shoreline.
There are umbrellas and sun beds for a small fee of 3.50 each and a little beach bar with showers and toilets. I would recommend getting here before midday as the car park got quite busy. On the way down to the beach you must stop off at the viewpoint and film the panoramic views of the mountains meeting the ocean - I have never seen a view like it. Only
A couple of warnings would be there are paragliders which land on the beach so be careful to stay out of there way and be careful with children playing in the sea without an adult. As I said the waves are powerful and will. Drag you under if you are not careful.
I cannot recommend a beach to go to more highly than this for a perfect peaceful and fulfilling day on your travels.

The road to the beach is in good condition, practicable by any car, and the scenery wonderful. The car park is full after 10 o'clock. There is a beach bar, and the sunbed fee is 10 Euro, but there is enough space and privacy for your own umbrellas. The water is an unreal blue, the scenery dramatic, and a lot of powerful big waves. The entrance to the sea is steep, and the currents quite strong.

The best thing about this beach is viewing it from the top which offers a truly spectacular view. The road down to the beach is bendy and busy as is the parking.
We arrived at 11.30 and beds were plentiful but within an hour none were available. The composition of the beach is made up from coarse sand and becomes pebbles nearer the Sea.The waves can be high and the drop is quite sudden. In a normal season without the travel restrictions I’d imagine a very busy beach. There was One refreshments vendor which was always busy. The sun beds (2) and shades were reasonable at €7 for the day and we’re sanitised before use.

A beautiful beach, no doubt, but not suitable for swimming (too rough, not clear water) or relaxing by the beach (too pebbly, too busy) during high season. I am sure it is lovely if you visit there like May or September? A car park was full by 1030am in mid-July and frankly speaking, there are many other wonderful beaches in Kefalonia. Although there was NO WIND on the day we visited, the sea was still so rough that we could not swim for long. Plus the water is murky and has no visibility. Be very careful if you have little ones - it gets so deep so quickly -like 1 meter in from the beach, you cannot reach the bottom. I would recommend you take a photo from the top of the hill, take in the gorgeous view, and then swiftly head to Assos or other places on the island.

il parcheggio è accanto alla spiaggia, ma consiglio in alta stagione di arrivare presto, entro le 10 massimo. Altrimenti tocca parcheggiare sui tornanti che ci sono per scendere in spiaggia, e la distanza diventa maggiore...
