We drove the mountainous roads which take you over the saddle col, below the even higher summit of Ainos, the mountain that dominates the island of Kefalonia. The slopes are clothed with black pine, and hundreds of goats nibble a living on its sparse grasses....More
We tried to visit the peak of Mount Aenos today (3/9/18) & the road to the top is closed due to fire risk. The views to this point are still fantastic and are a easy drive (well as easy as it gets driving a tiny...More
The drive up was fun for the family as we twisted higher and higher but when we arrived we were immediately welcomed by several wasps. The younger members of our family were not impressed. Wasps are present most of the time up here. We abandoned...More
So the park has re-opened and we had fresh temperatures of 19 degrees at the top and fantastic views. If you approach from the North side on the main Argostoli to Sami mountain road Ainos is clearly signposted as a right turn. The road is...More
The views are best in the early morning as the smog comes in from Patras during the day. But oh what beautiful views. Zakynthos is literally at your feet and you can see onto the mainland . The foot trails are in great shape and...More
We drove to the entrance to the park, only to find a STOP sign and a closed road. The handwritten note said the park was shut til Monday 13th. We enjoyed the drive up from Sami anyway, as the views were lovely and will probably...More
The scenery here is amazing. Not only at the top but also when driving to the national park. The road gets better when you enter the park, amazing views and open spaces with rocks change into green trees.
Park the car near the radio towers...More
Climbing so high makes it much cooler than the rest of the island to the point where the environment is completely different. Lush alpine mossy woods, wildflowers and hundreds of butterflies greeted us as we drove up to the top. Great views of the island,...More
The road up to the top radio mast is well metalled and good for even small hire cars. Park by there or lower down by the park entrance (which is pretty high up) and walk the rest. Do not even think about the gravel bits.

Hi! If you park next to the pylons, the walk to the start of the summit is about 15 mins (add twenty for photo taking though as it's just so beautiful), then once you make the climb up the forest steps, it's around another 15-20 depending on how fit you are. I have to stop a few times! Then, once you break free of the trees and see the rocky scree, take a right and it's five minutes of scrabbling to the actual summit where the sign and register are. It's absolutely stunning.
