Starting from the Acheron Springs one can walk about 90 min up river and fight off the heat. it's an easy walk, although special shoes are recommended, and suitable for all ages. You should expect to get wet, but can carry a backpack for the day.
Best time to go is early morning or after 4pm to avoid large crowds.

Went on an organised coach trip from Parga which included a relaxing boat ride at Ammoudia looking for otters, kingfishers etc. We then moved onto a small town called Gliki for a substantial lunch in a lovely restaurant by the river Acheron.
A 10 minute ride took us to the entrance to the gorge where we were able to walk upstream in the river. Although extremely cold at first, your feet soon got used to this and it was enjoyable experience. Unfortunately the toilets at the gorge entrance were disgusting and those on the cafe had not been checked for a while.
The guide was excellent throughout and we learnt much about the area - history, mythology, geography etc.
One advantage was that the coach picked us up from Valtos Beach and others along the main road from Parga. The cost was 50euros pp which bearing in mind the very good lunch we thought was reasonable value. We already had water shoes suitable for pebbly beaches and you could buy them at the gorge. We had bought a waterproof pouch in Parga for our camera.

Oh what a day, I booked a day trip which, went from the harbour at 10am
We sailed up along the little beaches until we join the river estuary and sailed up into it, taking in the beautiful scenery with swallows, swifts and house martins flying high and low across the river, just taking a dive and skimming the river surface for a well needed drink. It was beautiful to watch as I sat at the front of the boat taking dozens of photos.
We then headed back out to sea and carried on along the coast to a cave where the captain steered the boat into it. A few tourists on the boat dived in and swam in the clear blue water.
I couldn’t resist either and found it refreshing and quiet mentally moving too!
We then headed to a little beach for lunch and swimming, the captain said “ be really for 5pm as we will head back home”.
True to Greek time, the captain returned at 6pm! So typical of Greece!
We entered the port just as the sun was setting, an amazing day enjoyed by all.

This is an easy walk up the Acheron River, suitable for the whole family. The nice thing is that, while you can finally walk for a couple of kilometres, you can decide when to turn around depending on ages of the family or abilities of the walkers.

There is shallow wading from the beginning, and it does get progressively a bit more complicated, with some areas becoming chest-deep and some areas requiring a short swim to keep going. You then get to some huge rocks to be navigated, and for the few that make it all the way past the bridge there is a big lake.

Along the way, even from right at the beginning, very cold fresh water springs can be found on the sides of the canyon in a couple of places; these are perfect for drinking direct from the mountain.

It can get a bit cold in the water, and being in a canyon there is limited sunlight, so keep an eye on the kids for when they start to turn blue...:)

The depth of the water will naturally vary with the seasons, so be aware that at some times it will be an easier walk that at others. But it is still worth doing even if you don't get as far upstream as you would like.

Very important: wear decent water shoes!!! You cannot do this walk barefoot, and flip-flops or sandals are also a bad idea.

Magnificent, water flows from the mountains down into the valley. clear and cold water. just barely able to wade in the water. We were alone without rush.
Water was high and therefore unable to wade to the cafe on the other side of river.
I recommend swimming shoes when you wade in the river.

Stunningly beautiful BUT get there early! We arrived at 9.30 and could walk up the river and see very few others. We made it to the bridge but on the way back, it was like the M25 on a Monday morning!
The water is freezing but stick with it as it is so worth while and you soon get used to it. To reach the bridge does require you swimming in a narrow gorge that has quite a current against you - not for the young or weak swimmers but even if you make it this far and turn back, it is worth it.
Another reason to get there early...parking! The parking area is vast and when we arrive there were no more than 100 cars there. By the time we returned, it was utter carnage. Once you have finished the walk, we recommend avoiding the fast food options and jumping in your car and going the short way down the river where there are a few riverside restaurants where your enjoyment of the river can extend a little longer

On a hot summerday this is a wonderful activity. Just drive up to the starting point and start walking through the river wearing only bading suit and watershoes. At the start the water is very cold, however going further this gets less extreme. At some points the water is deeper but most of the time there is a possibility to go on without actually having to swim. If you reach the bridge, it is possible to climb onto it and make an extra walk further up over land. This is a really nice activity to do for everyone !

Rafting down Acheron river wasn't so exciting as expected. However if you wish to do so DO NOT chose the first group down the kiosk. Except if you wish to live along with Vivi the experience of paddling a slave ship. The ride was expected to be 30 mins approximately and we did it in 10. At least we took a break when she was on the phone and "chatted" with other boat guides

Stunning. I didn't expect this to be such an experience. We were here in september, not too hot, not too crowded. A delight and perfect day trip from Parga or Ioannina. Btw. yes the water is cold. So what, it's a river in a moutainous area. You'll get used to it pretty quick or even forget about it because it's so beautiful.

This is a very popular site during the summer, if you want a lovely walk along a river side this is for you, but be aware the walk can be over very uneven rocky ground, not suitable for wheelchairs, the water pours out of the mountains, it is crystal clear and very very cold, a picnic site is on one side and the walk the other side so make sure you pick the right side at the car park which is free, there are other pay car parks nearby, if you do venture into the water and most people do, wear shoes, the riverbed is quite moveable and not suitable for bare feet. The little tack shops sell shoes for that very reason, toilets are also available at the car park. The drive to the springs is a little off the beaten track but it is well worth the visit.
