On our way to Lindos, we stopped at the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin, the most famous church in Rhodes. It was built in the 1920s during the Italian occupation of the island and is on Mandraki Harbour. We probably would not have stopped on our own as the church does not look like anything special. However, it is beautiful inside.

This church is located north of Mandraki, the old port of the town. It was constructed in the 1920s, during the Italian occupation of the island. A tall bell tower with a clock is facing the harbor.

Originally, the Gothic-style church was Catholic and served the Italian Catholic community. In 1948, the church was turned into a Greek Orthodox Church and was declared the Cathedral of Rhodes.

On our visit, the church was closed and we couldn't see the beautiful interior.

Thursday 30th May and we visted this Church which is situated on the North side of Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town.

On entering the Church we very pleasantly surprised how beautiful the interior of the Chuch is in comparison to the rather plain exterior.

The walls are adorned with wonderful coloured frescoes of religious images. The crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling are certainly eyecatching . The domed rear of the Church is covered in a host of icons, the ceiling is worth looking at.

Something special to see in Rhodes. There is no entrance fee, a donation towards the upkeep of this wonderful place is very much appreciated.

It is called the Evangelismos Church; the Rodes town Cathedral built 100 years ago; it is situated on the sea front with a perfect view of the Mandraki Harbor.

The Church; although not like most Orthodox Byzantine design; is very impressive and surrounded by a huge courtyard and has a great looking Clock Tower.

Entering the Church; you will be amazed by the beauty of the interior; all walls, ceiling, columns, and arches are beautifully covered with very nice paintings, making the interior a piece of art.

The Altar made of white marble and gold door as well as the Icons and paintings add to the glory and holiness of this place.

The many crystal chandeliers spread all over the Church with the beautifully designed silver smaller ones add a lot to the richness of this Church.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin with its tall bell tower and clock is located at the side entrance of the church, facing the entrance to Mandraki Harbour. Built by the invading Italian forces in 1920 based on the architectural design of the Medieval Gothic Church of Saint John, with Gothic-style doors and windows, arches, and high ceilings adjacent to the Palace of Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town.
This catholic church served the Italian Catholic community till 1948 when Rhodes was reunited with Greece and turned into a Greek Orthodox Church. Then Greek painter, Fotis Kontoglou painted the interior of the church with interesting frescoes. Unfortunately, we were unable to enter the church, as it was late in the day.

TIP: Good location to take sunset photos.

I suspect this Church gets missed by many visitors to Rhodes and that would be a pity as it is truly beautiful inside, if somewhat plain on the outside!

Located on the north side of Mandraki harbor, this church was constructed in the 1920's by the Italians. The Gothic exterior is based on the Church of Saint John in the Medieval City, complete with Gothic-style doors, windows, and arches. Originally serving the Rhodes Catholics, it was later renovated into the town’s Orthodox Church. It became the Orthodox Cathedral of Rhodes in 1948. Don’t be fooled by the plain exterior – the inside is stunning! Adorned with beautifully colored frescoes, icons, chandeliers, and candles, it’s quite a contrast. We were able to take a quick peek inside before a service started.

I can't tell you how surprised I was when I saw the name The Church of the Annunciation for this church. I always thought there was just one Church of the Annunciation and it was in Nazareth, Israel.
And how pleased I was when I entered to see such a beautiful church. A must visit for anyone, Christian or not.
