- NottsKimNottingham, United Kingdom307 contributionsLovely stop offI arrived around 10.30 which is when the charity comes to feed the cats. Lovely man, very happy to tell you all about them and how they are looked after. After reading previous reviews I took some cat food which he was very grateful for. The cats really like the wet food and treats! Beware of the old man trying to Scam you out of money. Only donate to the charity that looks after the animals. They are there feeding them every morning and wear charity T-shirts so you know it’s them.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 8, 2023
- carol cChorley, United Kingdom191 contributionsPlaka Forest. This was the 2nd time that we visited Plaka Forest. I took a box of Cat Biscuits, as last time we visited there were lots of cats. Sadly, this time there was only one cat. I gave the biscuits to a Greek Gentleman who was sat making reed baskets and was feeding the Peacocks and Peahens. He smiled and he began feeding the Cat, the birds also liked the biscuits. He showed me the baskets he was weaving, he said it was for milk, they use them to make cheese, he offered me one, so I thanked him and gave him some Euros, he was pleased. I had a walk around the forest looking at the beautiful birds, what an amazing site, they come up to you and eat put of your hand. Well worth a visit for a lovely walk.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 25, 2024
- jackie_severnDerby, United Kingdom28 contributionsPlaka ForestGreat place to see Peacocks in the wild. In May they have babies trotting around as well. There is space to park your car but no designated car park so could get crowded in high season There are no facilities there (no toilets, no cafe and no seating) so take water/drinks with you. There is a large supermarket nearby which you will pass if you are coming from Kos side of the island. You can feed the peacocks but will need to take your own fruit. Grapes and small berries are best but grapes are definitely a favourite. Nice forest walks as well once you pass the Peacocks and go over the small bridge.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 21, 2024
- Christina T15 contributionsLovely place to visitHired a car and visited Plaka Forest and Antimacheia Castle the same day. Peacocks are friendly and can feed from your hand if you don’t mind being pecked. We visited in May and saw lots of peachicks. We took apple to feed the peacocks and cat biscuits for the one cat we saw. Just make sure you chop up the fruit into tiny pieces as they’ll try to gobble it whole rather than peck at it. Peacocks were more interested in the cat biscuits than the cat was. They will come running if they think you have food. Sadly people were feeding them crisps and slices of cheese. Saw a peacock flying overhead into the trees and several males displaying their feathers. Parking might be tight in peak season. Glad we visitedVisited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 25, 2024
- Anna13 contributionsChill forest where you can feed peacocks and ducksAmazing pine forest with peacocks, each of which is outfitted with a tiny blue Spartan helmet, in addition to their natural plumage, for added special effect. There are also ducks, and babies, and baby ducks. When you feed the ducks bread, unlike people, they show their appreciation by wagging their tail feathers for the approximate duration it takes to swallow a piece of bread. If you go, bring berries.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 10, 2024
- Lee GExeter, United Kingdom28 contributionsPeacocks galore and short walksA forest in the mountains with walks. They have peacocks running wild. A man sells bread to feed them. They are tame, and it's lots of fun feeding them. There are a few cats around which like attention too. You only need about two hours to look around so a short stop. It would have been helpful to have some sort of map erected that showed circular walks in the area. Well worth a visit.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2024

I had the most wonderful time exploring the serene beauty of this place. The trails are well-marked and offer a variety of difficulty levels, making it perfect for both casual walkers and more seasoned hikers. The lush greenery and diverse wildlife create a peaceful and immersive experience. The forest is incredibly well-maintained, and the tranquillity here is unmatched. Whether you're looking for a quiet retreat or an adventurous day out, Polka Forest is the perfect destination. Highly recommend visiting this hidden gem! --- Feel free to personalize it based on your own experience.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 26, 2024

Sunday 4th October we drove to the forested area of Plaka, close to Kos Airport.
Initially the road starts off all right but soon the tarmac disappeared and we were on an unsurfaced road. This took us to the heart of the forest where there was a car park.
There was a plethora of wild cats, of all colours and peacocks wanding freely around. We were fortunate to see one the peacocks spread his tail feathers in an attempt to impress one of the peahens. We did also see an albino, white peacock.
We did crossed over a very old and rather unstable wooden footbridge. This led us to a small pond where we could small terrapins/turtles swimming there.
It was good to stroll around the forest, for a while under the shade of the mighty pine trees on a carpet of dropped pine needles and cones.
There is no entrance fee, however, people did turn up with food to feed the the animals. An animal welfare group tends to the animals.
Unlike other visitors we did not stroke or cuddle any of the cats, they are feral and could be carrying anything, better to be safe rather than sorry.

Not the easiest place to find as it’s well off the beaten track. That said, it is so worth the effort to find. The cats and Peacocks live together in the forest and share a love of cat food. If your visiting make sure to visit the local shop and load up on cat food (or fish LOL). The cats are all friendly and are lovingly watched over by Kitty’s of Kefalos. A small charity that does an amazing job for so many animals. There are no collection boxes or charges to visit. We simply left €5 under the windscreen wiper to help to pay the eye watering cost of feeding the furballs.

Serene quiet setting in October can ‘t say how I’d feel with many tourists. Peacocks were plentiful and you are able to get close up photos easily and you’ll see them as you wander this cooling, quiet, enchanting forest. You’ll also see cats of the forest, this made me a little saddened as these kitties did not seem as healthy or happy as most of the cats we encountered on Greece. I wish I had some tuna to bring. If you visit bring some fish or donate some cat food for ur friends

We had a car for the day and Google maps found us a quick route to the forest...the tarmac road does end before you arrive and it's a bit rough but worth a quick detour as it's quite a crazy sight. Peacocks everywhere, cats everywhere and turtles/terrapins in the pond over a rickety bridge. The animals are well fed but this is done by a charity- kittys of kefalos they cannot ask for donations but spend 100euro a month on food with no help from the govt.

Popped in during a round the island car dash on the recommendation of an ex-pat. Lovely woodland, cool and shaded forest of cedar evergreens. Great for a leg stretch or for a full picnic (if you don’t mind being mobbed by peacocks)
Th Peacock are everywhere and very bold. Around the car park area there are lots of friendly feral cats (they are “looked after” by a local and the clipped ear means they have all been spayed.) All looking for a bit of attention and some extra food, so pop into a supermarket and buy a bag of cat biscuits for a € or 2. You’ll have more friends than you can count and it will help out the local cat charity. Great place off the tourist trail for an hour or 2 visit.

Lovely wood to wander around with the peacocks and cats, unfortunately no turtles now. It was mating time so you can see all the males strutting their stuff in-front of the girls. The peacocks are so tame you can feed them from your hands so take some biscuits or ask the cat lady for some!

Lovely place to visit and a lovely place for the animals to live. It is a registered charity Kitty's of Kefalos and a couple come daily and feed the cats. They neuter them and take them away for treatment if I'll. There is an old man who sits there nothing to do with the cats and pockets the money. He gives them cheap food they don't eat. There are about 40 cats and 70 peacocks, one white one. Lovely place. Well worth a visit if you like cats and peacocks.

Does anyone know the cost of a taxi from Tigaki?
Written June 19, 2019
about 30 Euros.
We wanted to see a lot of the island and found it was substantially cheaper to rent a car.

You should also be aware that the signpost for it is almost on top of the turning, easy to go past (as we did)

Does anyone know if excursions or day trips are run here from the hotels or if we need to get a bus?
Written July 25, 2017
Almost certain that this is not on any excursions or trips simply because the access roads are not suitable. You have even to be careful in a car as the roads are so rough and uneven !

Since going last May, I hear conflicting rumours about how donations are being used. Some say the cats are not being neutered to ensure an endless supply of kittens which tourists will love and carry on donating money in effort to help. There are rescue centres that need help. ARK (Animal Rescue Kos) and GASAH (Greek and Swedish Animal Help). These two take animals to vets to be sterilised and so reduce the number of strays and homeless animals.
