Hiking Trail Fira - Oia

Hiking Trail Fira - Oia

Hiking Trail Fira - Oia
4.8
About
This scenic hike connecting the postcard-perfect Greek villages, Fira and Oia, is one of the best ways to take in the beauty of Santorini. The island trail brings you along the caldera and Aegean sea, and through other quieter but picturesque towns of Firostefani and Imerovigli. The hike is about six miles and will take you between two to five hours depending on your speed. The trail is not marked and consists of cobbled, paved and dirt paths with slight elevation. Wear sturdy shoes, and start your expedition early so you can end at Oia in time for lunch. – Tripadvisor

You start from the centre of Fira, on the edge of the caldera, and you go up to the cable car, you go around it on the left and then you just follow the edge of the caldera. No chance of getting lost. The first half is in town, then there is a hill to pass, then we walk along the road for a few hundred meters and come across a small stand with cold drinks and some stuff to snack on (but no toilet). We start again for a long climb to a small church and then we go down to the. You can stop to eat at the “my friends” restaurant which has a magnificent view of the caldera at a much more reasonable Award than many other well located restaurants. For amateurs, their chicken penne is to be condemned. Hiking made in 4 hours with an 8 year old child and a good stop rehydration at the "stand". The views of the caldera are incredible! Have a nice ride!

I love doing these types of hikes on trips! It’s a great way to explore the small towns along the way and enjoy the coastline views. I would recommend starting this hike early in the morning (around 9 am) or later in the afternoon (around 4 pm) to avoid the hot sun. I started mine at 11:30 ish and finished around 3 pm (including a detour to Skaros rock and stops for pictures). I suggest wearing sensible shoes, a hat/sunglasses, and lots of sunscreen. Also bring water!! There aren’t many places to get food or drinks along the way. I ended up purchasing another bottle of water in Oia (it was a bit cold bottle for about 1.50 euros at the mini markets). There was a part of our route near Imerovigli where we were on the road with cars but I think there is a path that remains on the coastline. The terrain is gravely and can get very slippery at times when you are going downhill. I lost my footing a few times, so be careful!

A must do if you are in Santorini! We stayed in Immeroviglia so only had to hike partway, which is highly recommended. We left about 9:30 because it was a chilly morning but I wish we had left earlier. It got very hot by the time we arrived in Oia at 11:30. Wear good hiking shoes and bring water. We worried about finding the trail because the reviews said it wasn't well marked but there were so many people walking it both directions that you just follow where the people are coming from. From the pictures, it looks like you are on a cliff, but the trail is pretty safe and not hard to do. (Of course I am from Colorado, so what is easy for me may be very hard for others). Hiking towards Oia is more downhill, though you do have a fair amount of uphill.

Beautiful views but not much shade. Be prepared with lots of water. Loved the beautiful views and easy to find path. I'd recommend starting off early in the morning so that you make it to Oia by lunch time to enjoy some good food there.

We arrived by cruise ship and had planned to do this hike I previously downloaded a video describing the entire hike turn by turn in high speed this helped locating the start. We decided to skip the tram and walk the 600 steps up to the top walking past all the donkeys Once at the top it was quite busy, we located where the tram was located and started our journey. The first part is in town walking on sidewalks along the cliff edge. Stunning. The trail continued to dirt paths with a few vendors and stores selling drinks along the way. The hike took us about 3 hours to reach Oia but that is with stopping for pics and a beer along the way. The views are outstanding. Once in Oia we found a place for lunch and then continued walking through town down the steps toward Ammoudi Beach Along the way we saw numerous beautiful waterfront restaurants. The trail to the beach was rough. Be warned this is not a beach but a swim spot. You must enter the water climbing over lava rock. It’s a beautiful spot to swim and cooling off after the hike felt amazing. There’s also a spot to jump - just be mindful of the chain to the left. Once our swim was done we took a water taxi back to our port and had drinks. The water taxi was a great way to see the coastline and all the ground we had covered Highly recommend this hike but be physically able to handle the distance, the hills, and loose gravel/stones in spots. In total we probably walked 15 km

Hike that you can start from Fira, passing through Imerovigli, to go to Oia. The path is very well signposted, and until the end of Imerovigli, you will find bars for a refreshing break. If you're not afraid of heights or afraid of the ends of trails that can sometimes be a little slippery (small stones), go for it! (Never hiking, I found some passages complicated, especially downhill). Knowing that it is still a bit tiring, especially in hot weather, don't plan to visit the villages crossed during the hike, and consider returning by bus; no need to pay 35€ for an Uber, buses take you back to Fira from the “Bus top to Fira” for 2€ per person! About 10 kms, breathtaking views, churches, and you will silence the people who say Santorini is no longer a wild island 🤪

We started the walk from Fira early in the morning on our last day in Santorini. It is true what the reviews say to bring good shoes and water with you. We also found it important to keep an eye on our walking path as the condition can change with missing stones, uneven ground and holes for drainage. When we went in March a few members of our family started with sweaters and windbreakers but got too warm once we started moving. If you walk straight through at a good pace it should take about 2.5 hours to complete the 10 km walk but you'll likely want to stop for photos along the way and take a lot more time doing the trail. There are quite a few churches that have good vantage points to see the sea and land below. One of our favourite spots to hang out on the island is Skaros Rock (which is also a good spot for a sunset) and that is on the trail as well. If you get tired along the way there are bus stations that you can scan QR codes at and call busses to for pickup but we weren't sure if they were running regularly in March. After Fira there are no public washrooms until you get to Oia as far as we could tell but there are cafes around the route. When we went in March there were lots of hotels under construction and doing repairs for the summer season so quite a few were not open when we went. After Imerovigli there isn't much in terms of shops and places to stop but the walk is still very enjoyable. We saw lots of lizards and cats along the way which we enjoyed seeing too. We had visited Oia the day before our last morning in Santorini so we only went about halfway before we had turned back. Oia is a nice town as well and would be well worth the hike but it can get a little crowded in the afternoon and especially around sunset so plan accordingly. Exposure is a big thing here and in some spots along the route there can be car traffic, high winds and no shade. We didn't feel unsafe at any point in the hike and feel this is a must do activity if you are able to in Santorini.

Breathtaking views from Fira to Oia! Took the bus from Oia to Fira for 2 Euros each to start the hike. Taxi or Uber wanted nearly 40 euros. Bus departs Oia every 30 mins. We started at 10:30am, took a few breaks in the very limited shade stops and rolled into Oia at 1:15PM. It was definitely warm in the sun but manageable. Trail is about half sidewalks of cobblestone and half dirt/fine gravel. There are no restrooms on this trek and one drink stand about half way after departing Fira. Hike has some hills but never felt unsafe. One of the few things on Santorini that doesn’t cost anything to do and is is very fulfilling! Would recommend it to anyone who can handle a hike of approximately 6 miles and moderate difficulty. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

The view into the caldera is something unique and absolutely extraordinary. You could spend hours looking into the kettle filled with water. In Fira you are absolutely central to this. Fira and Oia also offer views of the well-known white houses. But these two beautiful places are also full of tourists.

Hi , we walked from Imerovigli to oia and it was 28 degrees in the morning when we set off , trail easy to follow but path very broken up on the steep slopes up and down. Please take plenty of water with you as the long climbs take it out of you especially as we are both in our sixties but reasonable fit . Big sense of accomplishment when you finish it as well . We got local bus back for 2 euros which runs frequently and takes you to fira bus station and then get another to Imerovigli which takes about an hour in total . Hope this helps !

We walked in June from Fira to Oia, the distance is approximately 8 miles from the centre of Fira, with a moderate difficulty, ideally wear trainers, not flip flops, it’s up hill most of way

Finding your way out if Fira to the path is a little tricky but just keep heading up, with the coast on the left. No real places to stop for drinks, take plenty of water, one little road side cafe about 3/4 of the way into walk.

Oia is very beautiful, modern, clean, similar to Fira but more boutique style. Shopping and restaurants similar to Fira. We got the local bus back to Fira for 1.60 euro. Bus station easy to find, in square, below main shops, times on electronic board, going every 30 minutes. Buses take cash only.

They say go to Oia for the sunset, which of course is fantastic, but we found it just as lovely in Fira, and slightly less crowded at sunset especially if you can get a restaurant table

I did so much research before my family decided to take this hike. Here was our experience. We were staying in Oia and decided to arrange for a taxi to take us to Fira at 7:00 am. It gets very hot and we wanted to do the hike when it was less crowded, would take us less time to get to Fira to start and before the heat really kicked in. I had also read that it was a little easier going from Fira to Oia. We exercise regularly. We are not overweight and do not have any underlying injuries but we are also not obsessive gym rats that run miles every day. Our girls are athletes (20 and 24). This hike was described to us as "good for all exercise levels". That is highly untrue. The hike was 6.2 miles and took us about 3 hours (just one way).It was not easy by any means. There was lots of uphill and uneven stones to walk over and parts of it were sandy/dirt roads with little pebbles. It was slippery in many spots and you had to be really careful. That being said, it was one of the best things we did during our whole trip - and we all thought so. It was incredibly breathtaking and we got insane pictures from the highest points of Santorini. If you are prepared (lots of water, sunscreen and the right shoes) and if you go early, and if you know what you're signing up for - it's the experience of a lifetime. We all wore sneakers, but I would've been much happier and felt safer if I had my hiking boots. We saw one couple go by in hiking type sneakers, if you can get those that would be ideal and they looked less bulky to pack than boots would be. Go. Do it. It's amazing.

The views are spectacular and it's free. You'll come across all of the most photographed areas of Fira and Oia. You'll walk through some of the main streets and also some fairly remote areas where the footpaths, although clearly marked, consists of rocks and stones so you will need good comfortable software. Once there you can get the bus back to Fira for around 1.60 and they seem to put on an additional last bus so that they have capacity to take everyone back.

I would absolutely recommend doing this but it’s not a short walk and you do need to wear trainers. You won’t get lost, the track is easy to follow, just be prepared - Take water, sunscreen and a hat (shaded spots are rare) and a camera. The views are breathtaking.
Oia is very pretty and seemingly busy in the day. Plenty of places for lunch or a drink. We opted for ice cream and view of the sea.
Rather than walk back we took the bus to Fira. The buses are busy and hourly but cheap and comfortable, certainly worth planning into the day as a round trip would be over 20km.

Left Fira around 10A in late June with four family members ranging from 22 to 57. Brought about three bottles of water each, which We climbed up Skaros Rock as well. Got some amazing photos and videos along the way. Stopped off at a a bar for about half hour in Imerovigli that overlooked the caldera to take on additional water and juice and to get a restroom break. (There are no restrooms along this path). Stopped at many churches along the way for photos. Got to the southern edge of Oia around 3P and had lunch at Mia’s Restaurant (pretty expensive place, but we needed to stop and eat and it was the first restaurant we saw). Restroom break here of course. Rest of family caught up to us from Fira to Oia via bus. The buses are cheap and reliable. Lolita Gelato was excellent! They had a restroom there, but Oia itself has a public restroom area. Went shopping for a few hours and had a perfect sunset viewing dinner at Strogili Restaurant. Our reservation was at 730P and we got seated at the top of the restaurant which had full views of both sides of Santorini. The dinner was delicious and priced reasonably. Then we took a bus back to Fira. Although there were long lines, we only waited for 10 minutes as they had multiple busses headed back to Fira. This is a must do! But, you should be reasonably fit, especially if you do the climb up Skaros Rock. The last 20 feet require four limb climbing.

Anyone who goes to Santorini must take this trail, as the landscape is beautiful and the walk will be rewarded with the views. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as most of the trail is on dirt ground. Go early to avoid the strong sun, wear a hat and apply sunscreen. If you are not physically fit, there is a bus that runs from Fira to Oia and the ticket price is very cheap.

The trail has some great views of Santorini and their islands. We hiked from Oia to Fira. This meant more uphill however downhill can be tough on the knees so it didn’t mind us. We left Oia at 6am which meant we saw most of the sunrise and cooler weather. I would not leave any later in my opinion if you want to beat the heat. Some challenging hills but the majority of the walk is pretty easy. A good 3-4km of it are through Oia/Fira. Along the way if going early there is basically nothing open. No water stops unless you go off track into the townships. Some very fancy and expensive hotel restaurants closer to Fira if you can afford it. There is no greenery - it is volcanic rock and blue water. Still beautiful though!! Wear enclosed shoes, we wore joggers which was fine but hiking shoes would have been more comfortable. We drank about 1L each. Glad we did it!

We walked from Fira to Oia and started at around nine in the morning. Arrived at around twelve. It’s steep at times, but most healthy people Can do This hike.
You meet many hikers on the way - it’s a popular trip.

Oia was way too busy for us. Too many tourists and walking through the city felt like standing in line for something.

Everything is superexpensive. We took the bus back to Fira pretty quickly.

If you really like hiking there are a lot of other trails around the Island. We walked number 3 from Kamari to Ancient Thera to Perissa. We also walked from Episkopis Gonia following trail 2, passing Pyrgos, and then switched to trail 1, walking all the way to the top of the mountain, back Down to Ancient Thera and to Kamari where We live.

These trails are harder, steeper and not for people with week knees. But they’re adventures :-)

Perhaps my expectations of this hike were too high, because I was a bit let down by this hike. I read in multiple spots that this was "the best hike in the world" and maybe I'm spoiled because I live by the Rocky Mountains (and before that, the ocean)...or perhaps we should have gone earlier in the day, as we were melting during the most monotonous, dusty, and loose-rock path part of the hike...

We did this hike, from Fira to Oia, with Skaros Rock (highly recommend), in about 3.5 hours, leaving Fira around 10 a.m.

The first portion, from Fira to just past Imerovigli is really nice. Lots to look at, both left and right of the pathway and good footing. The next section, to about the Church of the Prophet Elias, isn't bad. Certainly the church is lovely.

But the section between this church and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is incredibly "meh" to absolutely terrible when you're really hot. It's also a pretty long stretch (2.5 km or so) given the lack of stuff to look at, other than what you've already been looking at for at least an hour at that point. This is also the only area that, if you're not sure footed, you will need hiking poles. Lots of downhill with loose rock.

So if you want to do this hike, I suggest you walk to just past Imerovigli, then either bus or taxi to Oia (if you taxi, have them pop up to the Church of P.E.), then from Oia walk to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and back. Better yet, do the first portion one day, or stay in Imerovigli to avoid Fira chaos, then stay a night in Oia.

Trekking of about 10 km which offers wonderful and unforgettable landscapes.
Can be done by everyone with a minimum of training. Departure is recommended at the latest around 9 am with the sun at your back. After leaving Fira, continue towards Firostefani and then Imerovigli. The route winds on terrain mixed with stones, sometimes slippery except for a short stretch that leads back to the asphalt road. There are very few shaded areas so it is advisable to wear a hat and trekking shoes. It is essential to bring water since once you have passed Imerovigli there are no points where you can stock up. The show is unique and indescribable with breathtaking views.
It took us about 3 hours, without rushing and stopping often to admire the landscape and take photos.
