We took the Aria Spring route - parked our car before the spring. The sign said 1 hr 10minute to the summit. We didnt believe it because it looked tall and tedious. Eventually it took us an hour to get to the summit. Wonderful. Dont miss the Zeus cave (20minutes from the parking on the left). Do bring some water and wear proper shoes. It could be windy and cold up there a jacket could be useful.

One of the reviews mentioned they took their very young kids on this hike and that it was easy. I think you probably were referring to a different hike!

I started the hike at Agia Marina which is the shorter, "easier" trek. This hike cannot be classified as easy. It won't be the hardest hike ever but it is harder than moderate I would say. You really need hiking shoes for this. I wore tennis shoes which did the job but were far from adequate as there is a lot of rock and boulder climbing on especially the last 20-30 minutes. It gets quite steep as well.

It took me about 1 hour & 10 minutes going up.

Going down, I got lost because I was following another hiker but didn't realize he was going down the harder, longer path until I got a bit disoriented. After having a bit of panic, I looked on Google Maps and figured out I had to climb back up partially to find the correct path. Definitely keep on eye on yourself going down because as others have said, it is a bit tricky and you can get confused. Yes there are cairns (piles of stones) to guide you on the path but you can still get lost because there are cairns on both the shorter & longer paths. Use Google Maps if you can.

The view at the top is so rewarding. You can see Mykonos, Ios, Paros, and even Santorini amongst other smaller islands. I brought (4) .5 liter bottles of water which was just enough. Don't even think about bringing less than 1 liter of water. This is a difficult hike and it gets hot. I started at 9:45am. The heat wasn't unbearable but you're in the sun the entire time. There was a nice breeze.

We had 4 nights/3 full days on Naxos which was perfect. We spent one day exploring the villages and I thought this hike could be done on that day. I was wrong as you'll make a lot of stops on your villages tour and won't have time or energy for the hike. I ended up doing the hike on the 2nd day and the 3rd day was a beach and relaxation day although we went to the beach all 3 days.

This was one of the highlights of Naxos and should not be missed!

Lovely hike to do. Moderately difficult as there will be some places where you gave to scramble up but most should be able for this.

We parked at the Fontaine d'Aria. There was just a short line of cars and we had no trouble finding space but if it was in the busy season this could be more problematic. You can start from Filoti but it will add a lot of time to your hike. From the Fontaine, you head up steeply for about 20-30 mins and you reach Zeus' cave. Then it's another hour and 20 minutes to the top. It took us 3 hours 45 mins all told.

Definitely start early to avoid the worst of the heat, and definitely bring water. Also, watch out for the prickly bushes. The thorns are unforgiving!

Zeus, the Godfather of Greek mythology, chose a picturesque, yet difficult to get to location when hiding from the Titans on Naxos. While it is not a particularly challenging hike in terms of technical ability, it does take some stamina and grit to make it to the very top. Especially the way uphill was rather steep and not ideally signed, so at times along the way did we get a little frustrated, but eventually we reached the top (in 1-1,5h) and it was surely worth it. The way downhill was walk in the park compared to up, but don't get intimidated too early. You can park right next to the ascend of the hike, while it may surely get crowded once the pandemic is over and people will be starting to travel again.

Pay attention before you hike, there are two different paths to take, we took the shorter path, starting near the spring and going past the cave. This is shorter, but difficult hiking, despite some of the reviews on here that are a bit confused about that. We are young and in shape, but even so, we made the hike 10x harder on ourselves by missing the correct trail once we left the cave. You turn left just upslope from the cave. Do not climb up the rock slide in the canyon, you end up on goat trails, and things can get pretty dicey. The correct trail is marked *fairly* well, and is an intermediate difficulty hike, but its rocky and there is not much shade. The views at the top are worth it though, it was definitely worth the afternoon we spent there (lost on goat paths.)

Oh it's up there. . . . . Took the scooter up, up, and up and we still weren't at the top. . . . . . Came to a sign for Zeus and his cave. . . . Got off,but our Peg has a dodgy toe, so didn't go the 20 minutes there.
May well return when her walking is better
Overall, mountainous as mountains should be

Did the hike today. We went from Agia Marina. It’s a very small sign so am attaching a photo as it would be easy to drive past it. The hike is quite steep in parts with loose stones etc. However it is very doable. I am 60 and we got to the top in an hour. The views along the way and at the top are amazing. Don’t even think of doing it unless you have substantial trainers or walking shoes on. Also bring plenty of water. We went in the morning and it wasn’t busy on the way up but def more busy as we were coming down. Highly recommend as long as you are used to walking.

Amazing view from this sunny peak of the Cyclades.
We walked from the spring where you can park a car along the narrow road. Hike to the top is between 1h for the really fit people to perhaps 2h for the non gym goers. Don't forget to stop by the cave on the way up, you can't miss it!

If you find yourself in Naxos, you must do this! We got up at 4.30 and drove to the small church Aghia marina, parked and started the walk in the dark. We all thought at first we must be crazy! Thankfully we had iPhone torches and you can hear the goat bells. It took us just over an hour to walk up and we arrived a few minutes before the sun rise. It was truly beautiful. Photos don’t do it justice! It’s v windy at the top and the big birds (not sure what they were) start circling. Quick rest and hour to walk down. Honestly was one of the highlights of my holiday.

We took the 7:30 bus from Naxos town to agia marina and walked up mount says from there, returning to filoti for lunch. This was a total of 8.6km walking with 500m of climb. The top of the mountain is 1003m high, but the bus obviously takes a lot of the climb away. We took 3 liters of water but didn’t drink it all. You’ll need trainers or hiking shoes as there are some rocks and loose stones that need to be traversed. We took the easier route up and down, approx 3 hours total at an easy pace.
We absolutely loved going up, the views are incredible, you can see many of the other islands from the top. There are also falcons and vultures flying at the top, plus many many goats on the route.
We then hiked further around the area afterwards, which took us through some lovely small villages - chalki was particularly charming and is not far from filoti if you want to have an extra walk or to explore.
