Ancient History

This uninhabited island is rich in ancient history. Amazing to see and get a feel for the way of life thousands of years ago. A must do for history buffs.

Booked the 11 o'clock boat ride at the dock half hour before. Plenty of room on boat. 20 euro for boat ride 12 euro entrance to site. Half hour boat ride fun in sun on top deck. Arrived on island and greeted by local guides for 10 euro a person we ended up with private tour. Guided tour was worth... More

Amazing, huge ruins - takes a good 2.5hs to walk around it all. We skipped the tour to beat the crowds and had the place largely to ourselves while everyone else was waiting for/following the guide. We found plenty of signs etc to explain the key sites. You can also climb the hill behind the site for a view over... More

We undertook a half day Delos tour. I was expecting a small group tour but we were around 30 people in the group. While the tour guide Effie was delightful and very informative, the number of people in the group meant the time and space available was limited. The travel to the site is nice by boat. On the way... well worth a visit. don't go on a very windy day, it's open and hot. There's a museum that has lovely, many copies for originals in Athens museum.

This is one of the great archeological sites, anywhere. It, along with Delphi, was the center of Greek religion in the Classical period. While Delphi has a greater display of temples and religious artifacts, Delos is unique for the extensiveness of the ruins and the ability to see a whole town along with its major temples. The preservation of such... More

It wasn't worth the half hour each way on the boat. The ruins themselves are ok but there are better in many other cities (Rome, Ephesus). Everything is basically flat on the ground. The staff are not good with tourists (except for the male ticket seller). There is not much signage advising what you were looking at.

This is worth the visit! Tons of history, excellent views and an interesting museum with ancient artifacts. We had a good tour guide. He took us through with just the right amount of detail for someone who is interested. Likely too little if you are a crazy serious history buff. Would have appreciated better detail within the museum but it... More

This is the "history island" of Greece, an open-air museum. It's population today consists of a handful of people - who guard and maintain it. Smaller than Pompeii, it is still a relatively big place, comparable in size to it rather than to Herculaneum (an ancient town like Pompeii near to it) or Akrotiri on Santorini - with the difference... This was even better than I expected. One has to see the site to appreciate the size of this ancient city. We visited with a tour which was extremely helpful to understand what is there. Otherwise, there are no signs or explanations to the ruins. So, walking the ruins can take some time, depending upon your guide. However, be sure... More
