This beautiful newly renovated mosque is located in the heart of old town. After years of renovations it’s finally finished and opens to visitors.
Originally it was a church turned into a mosque in the ottoman area, and now it’s turned into a concert venue and dance school.
So you if you want to go to magical concert in a big mosque this is your place!
Also a great navigation point when navigating the small streets of Rethymnon

The building in the past was a Catholic monastery of the Augustinian Order named Santa Maria. After the conquest of Rethymno by the Ottomans, the monastery was turned into a mosque, which was known as the Mosque of Gazi HĂĽseyin Pasha or the Neratze Mosque.
The minaret was built in 1890, during the last years of Turkish rule in Crete.
Following the 1923 population exchange between Turkey and Greece and the departure of the Muslim population of Crete in 1924, the building was turned into a music school.
Currently the mosque serves as the Municipal music conservatory or Odeon of Rethymno with numerous musical performances held at its premises.
The interior is not really interesting, since it was heavily modified for the mosque current use.

This mosque from the Ottoman era is a beautiful focal point, located in the middle of old town.

The building was getting work done on the roof. It was closed so we could not enter inside. One of the locals informed us this is not used as a place of worship anymore rather a hall to rent for dance and music

It's a very well preserved monument which you can enjoy only from outside. The indoor is used as a conservatory (sonif you're lucky you can enjoy iys acoustic from the music inside).
If you have children, they can play at the large square which is located.

This old mosque is really quite beautiful. It doesn't function as a mosque anymore (now part of the music school I believe), and I don't think you can get inside. But it's certainly worth stopping by to admire it and take a few pictures.

Just by the harbour but not much to look at. It was build in the 1600s and now is a concert hall for classical music concerts.

The mosque is an attractive focal point close to the shopping streets of the old quarter. The minaret is no longer covered in scaffolding.

I was surprised to see this mosque on Crete as I was not aware that there was a big Muslim population on the island. I found the sight of the mosque rather exotic adding to the charm of the city.
