Our family paid for Panos as our professional guide for the day at both the Knossos palace and the impressive archealogical museum. He was really knowledgable, interesting, engaging and fun to spend the day with. Our son is into Greek mythology, so we decided we must spend a day with a guide and we are so glad we did. We recommend seeing both the palace and the museum with a professional guide if it is within your family's budget.

Dimitra gave my group (Smithsonian Student Travel) a tour of both the Heraklion Archeological Museum and Knossos, which lasted between 9 AM and 1 PM, on July 7th. This was a group of 24 intelligent and excited, yet also sleep-deprived and fatigued American high school students, and I could not have been more impressed with/appreciative of Dimitra's approach.

Before making her own introductions, she first asked me many questions about the students—their recent travels in Greece, when we arrived in Crete, which periods of Greek art and history interest them most, their learning styles, etc. She used all this information to strategize how to best engage them, and she did so very successfully, earning the students' attention and respect for the entire four hours.

Her approach, combined with her deep knowledge of Minoan and Cycladic archeology and her ease with these locations, turned what would have already been an excellent survey of Minoan civilization into an immersive and awe-inspiring experience. I cannot recommend Dimitra or this tour enough!

On the logistical side, Panos was also wonderful to work with. He was very communicative and helpful while I ran into unprecedented bank troubles while trying to pay for this tour.

Knossos came alive thanks to our professional archaeologist guide— Dimitra— from Tourist Guides Crete. Dimitra was passionate about the Minoans, incisive, insightful, witty, and expert. Her encyclopedic knowledge of telling details enriched our experience to the point that we now speak of our time in Crete as BK and AK: before Knossos and after Knossos. Panos, who organized the tour, was responsive to our original request, quick to respond on email, and full of helpful advice since we also wanted to combine a trip to Knossos with a guided tour of the Archaeological Museum. After touring Knossos, we followed Dimitra in our rental car, parked in a location we would never have found on our own, and followed her into the Minoan portion of the museum, where she guided us through the extraordinary collection. Dimitra encouraged our curiosity and helped us to understand context and cultural contributions. We saw the Minoans through her eyes and ours were opened to their engineering brilliance, respect for nature, and sophisticated artistry. We highly recommend Tourist Guides Crete if you want to learn as well as just see.

Our visit to Knossos was an absolute dream thanks to Panos! We had 5 people across 3 generations, including a 2 year old and a 6 year old, and he managed to teach and entertain us all. He was knowledgeable about the site and its history, but also thoughtful and interesting in his approach—not just straightforward history, but stories and tales and complexity and context. After hearing so much about Knossos in school and mythology, he really brought it to life for us, and made it worth the trek out from the US (and the 2 hour drive from Chania). Thank you, Panos!

Do not hesitate to book a guide through Visit Knossos. We had a private session with Joanna who made the site come alive with her knowledge, renderings and anecdotes. Our experience was so much more enjoyable due to her expertise. Do go either early or late in the day. We started at 9:00 am and by the time we finished around 11 the line to get in was so long it would have deterred us from going. However, the investment in securing a guide through Visit Knossos was money well spent!

The tour guide Dimitra is hand down a fantastic expert on minoan civilization. Panos, who organized the tour for my group of six, told me they call her the Walking Museum. They were right. Dimitra was funny, respectful and captivating in her discussion of this very special goddess culture. She led us through the Knossos ruins and showed us through the Heraklion Museum. We were enthralled the entire day.

It's a really good idea and money well spent to see Knossos with a tour guide. Make sure to buy the tickets in advance. Ours was from 5-6:30 pm and the crowds were starting to shrink.

We had a great 1.5h tour with our guide Panos. He told us all about the cultures at the time, the history of the castles, and illustrated it in such a way that you could really feel being taken back 2500+ years ago. It gave us a bigger appreciation for the place. He also told us what's actually real (not recreated by Evans) which helps to understand the place.

Highly recommended!

We planned to visit Knossos as a key part of our summer holiday visit to Crete, after some research, we booked a private guide with Visit Knossos.  When comparing the price of this with other trips, it was exceptional value because of the personalised and individual attention we received.

We are are a family of 2 adults and 2 teens, and felt a small, private tour would be more suitable for us to ensure that we could ask questions, hear everything that was said, and we had a specific interest due to a school project.

Panos was the guide for our small group.  In advance of booking, he advised us of a good time of day to visit for when it would be quieter and cooler.  We visited on 16th August 2023 at 4pm and Panos was our personal guide for the tour, which took around 90 minutes and was just for the four of us.

We never felt rushed, Panos provided a wealth of information from his clearly in-depth understanding, and our teens were captivated with the way he brought the history to life and related it to current world news, and compared the activity happening at Knossos in light of other historical events, and did all of this with enthusiasm and humour.

He clearly knew the site well, the best spots to stop in the shade to talk, and make it comfortable and fun for us despite the sweltering midsummer heat.

He also followed up the tour with an email on the same day providing further information to support everything he’d talked to us about, and some specific individualised information to help with the project.  This which was over and above our expectations.

We would highly recommend Visit Knossos.  Panos made this trip unique and memorable for us and we have special memories of this particular holiday.

My wife and I had an exceptional experience with Panos Kritikos during our private tour of Knossos. The planning process was smooth and Panos's responsiveness was timely and appreciated.

We met Panos at the designated time and he had our tickets already. After some brief greetings we dove right into the tour. Panos clearly has exceptional knowledge of the site and is passionate about the Minoan culture. Whatever question we asked he answered. He provided thoughtful replies and got us thinking. He related to us. We even paused toward the end of the tour to casually chat and get to know each other.

The best thing about the entire tour in my opinion is that Panos did not sugar coat the unfortunate history of Knossos and how Arthur Evans desecrated and manipulated the site. Panos also painted an intriguing picture of who the Minoans were and how they behaved.

If you are looking for an authentic and down to earth tour of Knossos then Panos is your guy!

This was an amazing, fun, and educational experience for our family group of 7, including 3 children between 7-15yrs. Panos was very entertaining, funny, and extremely well informed on the history of Knossos and the interaction of the ancient civilizations of the region. Using his expert knowledge and experience as an archaeologist, he made the history come to life for us, and the kids enjoyed the 3D re-creation views on the handy tablets that were provided too! Panos kept all of us engaged with his energy and insights into the lives of those who lived near Knossos long ago, explaining the social dynamics, hierarchy and way of life that could give rise to the mythology that we know today. Panos even provided us links and additional information after the tour so we might continue to learn about the Minoan history. Please support this small family business-you will have an unforgettable experience and will leave with a new appreciation for the intriguing history of ancient Crete. Highly recommended!
