This old church has been converted into a magnificent museum of Christian art after a seven-year closure. The results are nothing short of magnificent. The collection (mostly of Cretan icons) covers a long historical period. The critical and historical explanations are a demonstration of careful scholarship at its best. There is also ecclesiastical wood carving, silver, and garments. This is... More

Some of the many icons displayed in this museum reminded me of Giotto fresco paintings, and no wonder. Some of the earliest were from the 14th Century, just after Giotto's time, and a few even depicted Old Testament events, much to my surprise. This is a must see diamond ! Newly refurbished, this fantastic church built the 9th century is a jewel in the heart of the city. This used to be somehow a university during the cretan renaissance. Paintings from the cretan school, especially the fantastic, unique paintings of Damaskinos. Extra extra suggested !!! Do not miss it

The church was part of a monastic school which became an intellectual centre on the island during the Cretan Renaissance. St. Catherine, houses a Museum of Religious Art.

This nice old Church is adjacent to the Saint Minas Cathedral; it looks like it was renovated but was still closed for some reason; therefore we were not able to see the Icons Museum. We believe the Icons must be marvelous.

The church and museum are closed for renovation. There is no sign anywhere about it so we went several times in vain until we at last were told that it was not open.
