Venetian style structure location right in the city center. This small Greek Church of St. Mark is worth a visit.

This church is on the left as 25 Augustou St runs into the northern end of Plateia Venizelou. It is often shown on street guides as Agios Markos or San Marco but it's all the same church.

It was built in the Venetian style in the 17th century as the city's cathedral but following Turkish occupation, it was converted into a mosque. After the Turks were repelled, it fell into disrepair, but underwent an extensive renovation during the latter stages of the 20th century and is now used predominently as a gallery, and less salubriously, as an unofficial secondary seating area ( on its front steps) for the adjacent Izmir Kebab cafe.

For me, it's not one of the most lovely buildings in the city and despite it's renovations, it still looks rather frayed around the edges but as a site for displaying art, it makes a very handy, and central spot.

We visit this church whenever we are in Heraklion as there are amazing exhibitions which are always thought provoking. The most recent one (last week) had literally fantastic wigs and photographs linked to Greek Mythology. A lovely setting and a 2 minute walk to the Morosini Fountain square where you can realx with superb bougatsa!

It is an old basilica, which resisted the earthquake that destroyed most of the island's buildings, which is now a municipal gallery. While we have been there, there was a very interesting exhibition of masks of human faces from various origins. It was a well spent time.

It's an interesting old Venetian Church.
There aren't much to see but it's worth visiting it.
Entrance is free and there are usually art as well as historical exhibitions inside organised by the Municipality of Irakleio during the whole year.
I have never paid anything to see these exhibitions as far as now.
It's a small but nice place which reminds you how Irakleio looked like during Venetian era almost 500 years ago.

The church is a little run down and on our day of visiting there was graffiti on the front wall. The area it is located in is great to people watch over a coffee.

This church is worth a visit if you happen to pass it. It shows the Venetian influence very well.

As a part of the culture in Heraklion it is interesting to see.

This is another of the Venetian reminders in Heraklion. Most of the decoration inside is gone now, but the overall effect is very pleasing. The show of contemporary art (Cretan) was devoted to modern mosaics.

a small but very interesting historical building on a historical square in the city of iraklio, right oposite the beautiful Morosini fountain. entrance is usually if not always free depending on the exhibition as the building is currently used as the municipal gallery. even if you don't like the exhibition you get the chance to see the two graves of the dukes of Venice that are burried there.
