I wish I could give 6 starts to Georgios and his walking food and wine tour of Heraklion. As a solo traveller, it's often hard to find anything but mass tours but Georgios allowed me to tag onto another group. And when they cancelled, he still took me on a personalised, one on one tour of his city - an extraordinarily gracious gesture. We wandered all over the city and I absorbed history and culture in a way that isn't possible with just a map. And the places we stopped to smell and taste bread, coffee, cheese, herbs, wine and fish - all family owned businesses with gracious hosts. To say that I highly recommend this tour is an understatement.

Our tour with Georgios was one of the most informative and enjoyable that we have ever had. We always book walking and food tours in every new city and this excursion with Georgios was definitely one that rose above all the others. It was even more remarkable because there were only the two of us and Georgios still conducted the tour rather than cancel for low turnout. He was truly professional. He was also infectiously passionate about his hometown. We couldn’t help but feel the excitement about Heraklion and learn to love the history and exceptional food ourselves.
We started by discussing the plan of our tour with a bit of history, then eased into the day with a Greek coffee ceremony. Even though we’ve had this coffee many times before, the precision and care that Georgios put into these cups, that he made himself, gave us the most unforgettable, delicious Greek coffee ever. We were really made to feel that we were with a friend and not just a tour guide. Afterwards, we visited and had samples at a traditional bakery, then cheese shop, and then an herb & olive oil shop. At each stop Georgios shared so much and helped us to appreciate the amazing contributions of Cretan culture and food.
As we were guided between our different stops, Georgios gave us a walking tour of the old streets and explained how things were during the Roman times, the Venetian times, and the Ottoman occupation. The history of that area was so incredible and he was able to explain it all so understandably. Some guides can overwhelm you with too many dates and facts, but every moment on this tour was fascinating and enjoyable.
A spectacular seafood meal with wine and raki beside the sea was the most amazing way to finish the tour. That final feast alone could have justified the cost of this tour but with everything we experienced and the wonderful company of Georgios, this tour was of exceptional value. We very highly recommend booking with Vintage Routes Crete when visiting Heraklion so that you can also learn to love Cretan culture, food, and wine.

I consider myself very fortunate to have participated in Giorgios' tour "Heraklion Eat & Drink Walking Tour" - and when I return to Heraklion again, it will be primarily to go on this tour again - that's how much I enjoyed it. Giorgios is personable, amiable, and an expert on all things Cretan. Initially, I was not all that impressed with Heraklion, but seeing it through Giorgios' eyes and learning about its rich history and culture through him, I fell in love with the city. He started the tour with a clear and concise history of Crete which encapsulized the information I gathered from multiple books that I read and YouTube videos that I viewed - I could have saved myself a lot of time had I waited to heard his version first! With this history as context, we walked, ate and drank our way through the city and had an absolutely marvelous experience. One stop was to a coffee shop where Giorgios led us through the process of preparing for, making and drinking Greek coffee. Though I have had Greek coffee many many times before - I've never had it this way. Thinking back about it, it was almost like attending a ritual or ceremony and Giorgio was the 'high priest." I left there with a heightened appreciation for the coffee and its preparation. On the tour we sampled many other local culinary delights (e.g. cheeses, wines, herbs, olive oils, cakes, pastries, cookies) and ended the tour with a scrumptious seafood lunch. In the last decade, I've participated in many wine and food tours but this is one that I know I will remember the most. Giorgios' personality was such that the tour was like was visiting an old friend who took us around to see the sights. It was relaxed, informative, filling and tasty! Thank you Giorgios! I hope to see you again!

I can highly recommend this wine tour. The guide (Caspar) was very knowledgeable on Cretan wines, Cretan history, and Crete in general. We visited three domaines. All in a very relaxing atmosphere. Even the girlfriend (who likes to drink wine more than to taste and discuss wines) had a blast and was not bored by the tour being too focused on the tasting. What i mean to say is you don't need to be a wine-buff to enjoy it. The place we went for lunch was the best authentic Cretan food we had all holiday. There is just nothing bad to say about it. Money well spend.
Cheers!

I took part in a post-conference a tour run by Vintage Route Crete. There were about 20 of us on the tour, we enjoyed an amazing visit to Knossos, followed by wine vineyards (in breathtaking locations) and a wonderful lunch.
I agree with other reviewers: Georgios is a star, my flight time meant I could not stay for the last part of the tour, but Georgios drove me to the airport so I could make the tour and my flight. He is just a wonderful person.
Go on one of his tours- they are fabulous. You will not regret it!

My partner and I booked an "Eat and drink walking tour" in Heraklion.
This tour is a great opportunity to learn all about the History of Crete, their traditions, food, culture...
We really recommend this, especially for this price! It's a very good price-quality!
Also our guide was really fantastic! He was very friendly and could answer all of our questions about the Cretans, history, things that happened around...

So this is what happened:
On 9:30 we began the tour at our meeting point.
First we went to an authentic Crete bakery. There we could see them working in the back of their shop. We were also be able to ask them some questions. Caspar, our guide, told us the great history of this family bakery and many more great things! Also we could taste 3 different typical Greek pastries/bread.
Then we went to a Greek coffee shop. The owner was roasting his own coffee beans and we could taste the fresh grinded self made greek coffee.
Further we saw some fishermen selling there fresh fish.
We also went to the city wall and theater.
Then we visited a cheese maker. We tasted some special cheeses, made in Crete.
Between the visits we were walking all over Heraklion, did some sight-seeing and could ask as many questions we wanted.
Also we went to a herb shop, where they sold herbs (also typical Cretan herbs) and made different products out of these herbs. We were able to taste some home made chilled herb-tea.
The last stop was in a restaurant. There we got a lot of fresh, Cretan food (very delicious!!). We certainly didn't go home hungry (the opposite)! We also tasted 3 different Cretan wines. It was not only tasting, because afterwards we could drink those 3 bottles.

We are happy we did this tour. It is really interesting and very good to learn more about the Cretan culture!
We certainly would do this again!!

We recently visited Crete and upon arrival, realized the travel agent booked us in a luxury hotel and resort that was convenient to nothing! We heard about wine tours before going to Crete, but all we heard from the concierge was car rental. Stashed inconspicuously was an elegant brochure for Georgio's masterful tour of food, wine, and culture. I called him on a Sunday morning for a Monday booking. He asked what we were interested in beside wine and food. Promptly at 930 the next morning he showed up and drove us to and from central Crete. The day was approximately nine and a half hours long. The day was a highlight of my two weeks on the Greek Islands. His knowledge, hospitality, patience, and passion for Crete were exciting, and refreshing. He did nice little things on this private tour, whether it was buying a coffee or water for us, or taking us to ceramic shops that I would have never found on my own. My two traveling companions raved about this trip to me. We went to great wineries, fabulous tasting, but the quaint towns were heaven sent even in the August heat. The lunch was outstanding with enough food for one's lunch and dinner. The total price per person was incredibly reasonable. I honestly cannot write enough superlatives about Vintage Wine Tours. Hence you don't need to rent a car and stress out over finding icons on the GPS that probably don't exist. Georgios and Vintage undoubtedly will be a standout on the Island of Crete.

My sister and I took this tour, and absolutely loved it. The guide is welcoming and very informative - he told us his goal was to give the tour he would give to his friends, and that's exactly what it felt like. We were able to interact with some wonderful Cretan store owners (Coffee roasters, cheese mongers, bakers..) and taste some wonderful things! Our guide also took us through the city and showed us the sights and was able to tell us more about them than we would have known on our own. The wine tasting and lunch at the end was truly a delight. We took our time, enjoying the wine and food on the coast - everything was spectacular. This tour exceeded our expectations. We were able to see the ins and outs of Irakilo - I had heard other people say that you should get out of Irakilo to go see the rest of Crete, that there's not much there. While there is a lot to see on the island, there is also a lot to experience in the city - and this tour really extenuated that.

Me and my girlfriend did this. We both had a really fantastic day! Georgios is a lovely guide and clearly passionate about wine, and very helpful and professional whilst also friendly.

We visited Lyrakakis and Stilianou wineries. It is possible just to turn up at these places and they do not cost too much. But then you have the hassle of working out who’s driving and the wines are properly explained by Georgios.

I would have preferred lunch in between the wineries, as we were both feeling the effects of the wine a bit by this point. €95 may seem a little on the more expensive side but we both felt the day was well worth it.

Also, lunch is included and was lovely Cretan cuisine.

Overall, an excellent day out!

We did the food tour of Heraklion. The food and drink was excellent and the guide was invaluable. There is no old town to see in Heraklion, so a food tour was an excellent use of our day.
