This is the main shopping street leading from the fountain downhill to the harbour. It is what one would expect, full of cafe's remarkably well priced shops, plus the usual tourist tat shops. One will also see the odd venetian building which always make good photo stops.

A mixture of old and new retail shopping that blends seamlessly. Prices are keen from the many souvenir shops down the old market street. Lots of different eateries try to entice you in. There is an ancient city wall running round part of the town but we couldn't find a walk round it, disappointingly.

This is the focal point of the city and has lots going for it. Its proximity to the sea adds a lot to it and we enjoyed our time there.

There are lots of unique shops and you can buy just about anything you need. It’s definitely worth putting some time aside to stroll from top to bottom. It drips with history and many of the buildings are very beautiful indeed.

25th of August Street is the mai street that runs from Morosini Fountain (Lion’s Fountain) down to the Old Venetian Harbor in Heraklion. There are a bunch of tourist shops and cafes. It can get very busy when the cruise ships land.

This pedestrian mall travels up from the Port all the way to the Square of Lions, passing along the way banks, offices, shops, several restaurants, bars, the Venetian Loggia, Church of St Titus and other interesting buildings. A nice spot to stroll and enjoy the ambience of Heraklion when you consider what the Street is named after??? It remembers the August 1879 uprising when Christians were slaughtered by Turks which led to a British crackdown & eventual expulsion of the Turks! Pretty peaceful nowadays I think in comparison?

This pedestrianised street leads from the roundabout at the far end of the port and up towards the lion fountain. It was very busy when we visited on a Saturday but at least you don’t have to dodge traffic!

This wonderful street extends from the Venetian harbour and the Fort of Koules at the bottom to the crossroads of Heraklion at the top .
It can easily be used to orientate yourself in the city of Heraklion while busy touring and enjoying the sights and sounds of Crete .
There are many travel agents , banks , atms , coffee shops and bars including restaurants with all cuisines .
There are souvenirs shops galore with all types of Greek and Cretan gifts.
There are corner cafes with drinks and snacks to enjoy while strolling and shopping. The architecture of the various buildings is a marvel to delight in a short precinct.
H and M and Hondos centre provide some formal department shopping .
Definitely worth a gentle stroll and snack or meal on this street

25th of August Street (25is Avgoustou) was named such after a religiously driven slaughter on the feast of St Titus, 25th of August 1898.

Nowadays it’s a full on tourist trap running from the Dolphin Roundabout across from the fortress down to Lions Square.

The end nearest the dolphin statue is almost exclusively for the tourists but as you get further away a smattering or ‘proper’ shops appear for the locals.

The Rose scam folks were in great evidence so don’t accept a rose from someone as next comes, now you must pay me….

My Tip: Keep a close eye on your belongings and your bag closed.
