VISITING this museum was like coming down on Christmas morning to open your presents. Everywhere we went there were fresh wonders to see and marvel at together with a wealth of information that was impossible to fully take in. Everything became a whirl of impressions from gold jewellery to double headed axes and from marvellous frescoes including the famous dolphins fresco to colourful pottery, coffins, statues, collections of animal figures, ornate shields and mosaics. We lost ourselves here for several hours, but always keep your guard up for behaviour because staff are fiercely protective of the exhibits. Even in the short time we were there I saw at least six family groups or careless adults warned about their behaviour which staff felt threatened the exhibits. There was no apology from staff for their strong words nor should there have been. People know they are in an important museum and should behave with respect. If you are planning a visit then you should start on the ground floor where the first dozen rooms contain the Minoan collection. Move on then to the first floor covering frescoes and history before you end back on the ground floor with the sculpture collection. Private collections are presented in separate sections. There are good quality toilets in the museum together with plenty of chances to a buy a souvenir if you want one. When you exit the museum it is possible to descend slowly to the port area and explore that as well, passing shops and tavernas along the way.

I had a private guided tour of the palace with Guide Stella. She was a world class guide! Extremely informative. I said to her during the tour “if I went without the tour I would never have knew the things you are telling me”. A guide is highly recommended, learn about all the wonderful ingenuity and history of the Palace and landmark itself. A truly educational experience!

This was a special experience to be able to tour with Joanna through WeGuide. Her approach and presentation was refreshingly insightful, leaving us with deep desire for more in-depth understanding of the Minoan history. We highly recommend!

The only way to visit and understand Knossos is to have Joanna Kalypso Glyptis as your guide. “Kalypso” in ancient Greek means “she that conceals”; a complete misnomer - Joanna herself is quite the opposite. She is the best historical guide we have ever used, anywhere. She is equipped with an extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge of Middle East, Egyptian and Mediterranean culture, language and history. She draws a powerful picture of the emergence and decline of Minoan culture and the impact of the bull on mankind’s shift from hunter gatherer to agrarian domesticity. Joanna connected the dots for us across Iranian, Egyptian, Phoenician and Indo-European tribes and migration, and gave Knossos context. She challenges old dogma and myths and brings fresh insights into the role of women, and new interpretations of the roles of gods, witches and divines which interweave and embellish all religions. Her historical portrayal of Sir Arthur Evans and his unearthing of Knossos is revelatory. Joanna vividly emphasises the power of language and communication to cause major cultural shifts. Her own linguistic and intellectual prowess made our brains fizz.
