It was originally a monastery church (13th century) but was converted to a mosque during the Ottoman occupation.
It is so impressive and the first striking feature is that besides the church bell-tower it also has a minaret which stands still from the Ottoman days.
The massive chandelier is overwhelming and the ornate woodcarving shows great levels of craftsmanship. There is such beautiful artwork and craftsmanship to admire that alone is worth the visit.

Being Greek Orthodox, its hard for me not to go by a church and not go in and light a candle and marvel at the iconography. This little church does not disappoint. Keep in mind though that when visiting a church (any church in Greece for that matter) modesty is important. I always keep a lightweight large scarf in my bag that I can throw on my shoulders to cover myself. Also, not to sound preachy, but keep your voices down. I had to shush up a group of tourists that came in like a tornado!

Although this church opens its doors to everyone, it would be disrepectful to think of it as a tourist venue. It is a real, functioning Greek Orthodox church that serves its surrounding parish. Beautifully maintained, exceptionally well adorned and displaying all the dignity of a true spiritual centre, this church is a beautiful centre-piece to Chania. Please enter it with the respect and deference that it deserves.

One of my travel secrets is to always find a church for a period of rest, prayer and quiet meditation. As it should be, this house of worship provided a perfect opportunity to do so. I enjoyed watching a number of local parishioners come through for their daily ritual/devotion.

Perhaps my favorite part of my visit to Crete. This insanely simply hidden jewel is well worth the trip! To be able to walk on history is awesome; to visit with practicing monks is awesome; to feel something of a spiritual touch is awesome. *Ladies, do NOT wear shorts or bare your shoulders. Someone I was with made the mistake of wearing shorts and they gave her a wrap to cover up with.

Agios Nikolaos was by far the most impressive Orthodox Church I saw in Chania and I was impressed even before I went inside. The first striking feature is that this is a church with both a church bell-tower AND and minaret. This fusion of Orthodox and Islamic is a reminder of the conflict and fusion that has been imposed on the story of Crete.
Inside the church the massive chandalier is really overwhelming and the ornate woodcarving shows great levels of craftmanship. Just seeing such beautiful artwork alone is worth the visit. And there is so much craftmanship to admire.
Walk all around the exterior of the building and see how extensively impressive it is.
Then sit in Plateia 1821, the lovely square in front of Agios Nocholaos. Go to the giant plane tree in the middle and note the monument nearby. In 1821, the first year of the War of Independence for Greece from the Ottoman Turks, the Turks hanged the bishop of Kissamos and other Christians from this very tree.
Look around at the citizens of Chania today as they sit in this historic square that takes its name from those terrible events.
Today's locals relax here and drink refreshments in the shade. Time moves on and the Greek people are certainly resilient.
Inspiring!!

For me, the most interesting aspect of this church is its history as both a church and a mosque and the obvious manifestation of that history is the juxtaposition of a crucifix and a minaret. I don't have too many pictures of that from my travels! We did not enter the church as it wasn't open while we were there.
The nearby square is appealingly shady and filled with possible spots for refreshments.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos built 700 years ago as a Catholic Church and converted to a Mosque during the Turkish occupation of the island; the Mosque Minaret still stands intact, was converted back to an Orthodox Christian Church.
The Church architecture is very nice and the Bells and Clock Tower gives it a unique look. We heard that the church is beautiful inside; unfortunately the Church was not accessible at the time we went to visit.

Although it's not the largest church, Agios Nikolaos is by far the most beautiful, having a floor that looks like it was designed by Maurits Escher and paintings and icons that are both beautiful and moving. It even maintains one of the minarets from when the church had been converted into a mosque during the Ottoman occupation of Crete. A small but very informative pamphlet is available that chronicles the history of the church. Well worth a visit!
